I bet those chairs weigh more than that shell.

Hah, yeah my old physics professor built a beetle dune buggy a while back with all new parts (block, rods, pistons, etc.) out of a catalog and it ran in the 12s. He said that it could have had a better time, but when you approach 140 mph in a beetle they tend to take flight. No pun intended.

I had a 61 and a 63 that I restored from the bottom up. Everything. They're not that heavy in a bare shell form.

                        40hp can be fun, that's right. :)

Try 140hp in one of them, that's just downright scary!

My first car was a '73 Super Beetle, same vintage as this one. It had a rebuilt 1300 in the back and was tons of fun. No power assisted anything. No padding on the seats. No heat. No working fuel gauge. Leaded gas only. The battery would short on the rear seat springs if I was not careful with where my bookbag landed.

I could literally lift the car by the back bumper and hang it off a curb for oil changes. I lost count during her final oil change and put in one quart too many... a fact I learned halfway to school that night. I miss that car sometimes. It was like a street legal go-kart. :sigh:

I'd love to have an old type 3, kombi, thing, ghia, or bug. I love old dubs. If I didn't have my 1600 I'd have a hood ride squareback or a thing for sure...
