While the sweeping generalization about cops abusing their power frequently may appear to be true to you I can assure you that out there somewhere is at least one good peace officer and he has more than likely had to deal with some pretty unsavory shitbags who would love dearly to catch him unaware and unarmed. Let the fucker carry anywhere he want's.

Yea I'm not arguing the peace officer thing, I honestly know nothing about their ranks, a cop's a cop to me. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, I just don't know the differences.

I don't like the vast majority of cops. That being said I have been pulled over and have had conversations with some great police officers. We get these guys around here who talk about the power they felt when they got to use their service pistol on an injured animal that need to be put down. I've been pulled over as an 18 year old in an e36 and been asked how I pay for my car, if I'm selling drugs, and been told my car smells like weed (last time I touched weed I was 16). I've also been pulled over going wayyy too fast and had the speed knocked down and have had the officer tell me he lost his liscence as a kid and that it sucks, that kids die all the time speeding, and that I had a nice car that he'd hate to see around a pole.Comment

Let's reverse the situation.. bouncer throws guy outside (and has an entire bar to watch over, so he can't for the sake of his bar babysit one drunk dude). Drunk dude gets in his car and runs over the bouncer, leaves him for dead, then starts plowing other people around as he gets away. (he tried repeatedly to do this to the bouncer, so what's to say he doesn't do the same to others around who are there as witnesses? He's drunk, so while it's possible he just leaves he's also in a rage and wants to do damage.) The news then gets wind that an off-duty cop, who was carrying, saw the whole thing and did nothing. Everyone would be up in arms about "protect and serve" and how this guy neglected his duty.
Sure, there's some bad apples out there but our society would fall apart without cops, so I don't buy this "not a fan of cops" thing that some of you portray. Grow up and recognize that, while tickets are annoying, cops and laws are essential to our society, and cops allow that society to function by enforcing laws that we (as local republics/democracies) decided on and agree to live under.sigpic89 M3Comment

you are a moron and should quit posting seriously. you obviously have a hard on for police officers and need to recognize it.cops should only be considered cops WHILE ON DUTY. and similarly they should only be able to carry their issued piece while on duty. if they want to carry their own gun on their own time, go for it, they should have the right just like everyone else.
as far as carrying to protect yourself from people knowing your a cop, maybe if cops didn't abuse their power so frequently then people would actually LIKE them and they'd never have anything to fear.
for your buddy who carries at the gym, let him suck your dick already so he can get over his whole issue of trying to impress his buddies by carrying a gun to places where they will never ever have to be used - he's a retard and bringing it is only increasing the chance that it's gonna get stolen and used with evil intent
the driver, he should been pulled out and beaten to a pulp with the off duty cop's BARE HANDS. fucking waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles resorted to using a gun. the drunk shoulda never been allowed to get in his damn car. bar should be liable, i'm sure a smart enough attorney could find a solid tort to go to court with in this situation.
guy should not be dead, just have both his legs broken. cop should have both his index fingers chopped and seared without painkillers as a punishment for the murder, as well as turning over his badge and being restricted from owning a gun for atleast 20 years. bouncer should be sued by family of dead guy for hundreds of thousands for not taking precautions by detaining the drunk instead of letting him loose on the outside world, afterall the bar is responsible for allowing the drunk to get so hammered in the first place, they were comparatively neglegent. In CO, a bartender that doesn't cut someone off before they become a problem is partially liable for the drinker's actions.
inocent bystander that got shot shouold sue the bar in a criminal tort case. bar policy should be to resolve all instigated issues INSIDE, not just throwing people out and making the problem that they fostered the outside world's issue.
a officer is a OFF DUTY officer when he is not on the clock. it is there right to carry a weapon when ever they choose. they go through a far more rigorous background check to make sure psychologically they are safe to carry a weapon. which cant be said for most concealed weapon permit holders which go through a basic gun safety class and a background check.
maybe cops shouldnt abuse their power then they wouldnt have anything to fear and people may like them? WTF kind of logic is this? there are a quite a few thousand people walking the streets with a legal permit to carry a concealed weapon who could give two shits if anyone likes them. when the situation arises they want to protect them selves, how is a cop any different than this civillian?
the cop should have beat the drunk guy with his bare hands? right, again WTF are you thinking? ok the cop beats the guys ass, guy sues off duty cop for assault (which since your so sue happy youll understand im sure), cop goes to jail for beating guys ass. gee good plan. instead the cop who is authorized to use deadly force in the protection of the public used this right and ended a potentially far worse situation if he had ran over more than just the bouncer.
its apparent also that youve never worked security in a bar. well thankfully i have and ill clear up a few things for your ignorant dumbass. in THIS state (oregon, although i live in washington) you are correct a bartender is supposed to realize the level of intoxication of their patrons and cut them off, inform security and offer the patron a non alcoholic drink or call a cab to get them home safely. if a situation occurs in a bar (which from the sounds of it this particular person caused many) it is NOT the smart idea or proper way to handle ANYTHING by keeping a/the "threat" in the same area as the rest of the general public OR the area which anyone that he (the threat) is causing problems, use your head, does that REALLY make sense? it is the bar's responsibility if the patron leaves and gets into a accident, you are correct there. the person that was shot suing the bar in a criminal tort (spelling issue i take it?) case? how is it the bars fault? did the bar fire rounds into innocent bystanders? no. the officer on leave did. how does it the bars responsibility for someone elses actions? right, its not.
now the issue i do have with this scenario is that the officer is 1. on leave and 2. in a alcoholic enviroment. being on leave last time i checked they take your duty weapon, but i guess that doesnt mean he cant carry a personal piece. and 2 i would think because of the officer being in a bar he was checked for intoxication and for his sake hopefully he was not, that i can understand.
to end this. i am not a officer, i have worked security and been in this position. there isnt always a chance to call the police (which from the way you view them shouldnt help your ass anyways), you have to take things into your own hands. i am not pro-police either, i just understand they have a job to do and people may not see it as being the way they would have handled it making them look bad to others. people dont like cops because they enforce the law, when you break the law and get caught you tend not to like them because you got caught and are now in trouble for it. its like being a kid getting caught all over again, or oh no they are inconviencing you and your precious day/time BOO HOO.
your points offer little validity and seem to come from some fantasy world or medieval. i mean seriously chopped fingers? you apparently have a grudge when it comes to officers. but your reasoning makes no sense either. when it comes down to it, regardless if the patron/threat was drunk it was HIS choice to drink and it was HIS choice to do what he did. i really dont see any error in the officers actions short of where he was at when this happened and the chance of intoxication imparing his judgement.

Why the fuck does the bar need to be a baby sitting service to people who don't know their limits? How can you possibly expect the doormen to mind read that a drunk guy they've just thrown out is going to drive home?

be surprised (well maybe not) what people can sue each other for and win.
at the bar i worked at, it was owned by a corporation. rules/policy handed down for GWA's (lol, PC for Good Will Ambassadors, wow, tell me about it) from the corporate office was: GWAs are not to physically touch any patron while inside the restaurant, nor on the premises/property. so. basically we could get punched in the snoot by a drunk customer but we were not allowed to touch them. and you can imagine how much that rule was followed......Last edited by smonkbmw; 03-01-2009, 01:46 AM.Comment

So the drunk guy tried to kill someone with his car and gets shot by an off duty officer.
Sad that he died, but he was in the middle of trying to kill someone.
What if he had floored it and hit a crowd? There could have been multiple fatalities at this apparently over crowded bar.The Keystone Killers
