    meahwhile, back in reality...

    2012 hottest year on record:

The high tide mark in Venice reached its sixth-highest level since 1872:

Hurricane Sandy set the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded north of Cape Hatteras:
Superstorm Sandy is not the most costly or most deadly, but the hurricane-turned-cylcone can claim several historical titles.

940 millibars is 0.94kpa. normally at sea level the pressure is about 101.2kpa.

2012 sets record low sea ice minimum:

2012 sets record drought in the USA:

Driest Seattle august in 120 years:

(it was also the second longest dry spell in the PNW on record)

2012 hottest October since 1880 in the southern hemisphere:

Sea level rise in 2012 above predictions:

but don't worry, back in La-La land (aka, the religous right), everything is A-OK.

I will admit I chose to be ignorant on AGW for a long time. I didn't want to believe, because it's depressing. Hell, the first time we were told about it was in 1987. My parents are religous so of course it was a joke to us at the time.

I just wonder, what will it take for the deniers to stop their cognitive dissonance? When an extreme weather event finally affects them?

The authors suggest that this could, in part, be a result of the media's tendency to always offer two opposing opinions, even on issues where one is a fringe belief.

Here ya go, Ill play Devils advocate

Here are three not-so trivial questions you probably won’t find in your next pub quiz.

First, how much warmer has the world become since a) 1880 and b) the beginning of 1997? And what has this got to do with your ever-increasing energy bill?

You may find the answers to the first two surprising. Since 1880, when reliable temperature records began to be kept across most of the globe, the world has warmed by about 0.75 degrees Celsius.

From the start of 1997 until August 2012, however, figures released last week show the answer is zero: the trend, derived from the aggregate data collected from more than 3,000 worldwide measuring points, has been flat.

that's because 1997 was a really strong el nino which resulted in an exceptionally warm year. Basically the date is cherry picked by the deniers to say there's been no change, when the trend is still obvious. going from 1997 to 2012 in a straight line is not a trend, because you're ignoring all the data before and after.

hell, if you'd bothered to pull your head out of your ass and read, you'd see that was already covered, and that almost all of the hottest recorded years have been since the year 2000.

keep pretending nothing is happening. you live in an area that will be heavily affected by many aspects of AGW, you'll find the truth eventually.

                god you're predictable nando
                ignore the data, perfect
it doesn't matter if you start in 1997, the "hottest year on record"
                atmospheric CO2 has risen, "substantially"
                yet temps have not

and if the data wasn't damning enough, the following quote from the article is

"Even Prof Jones admitted that he and his colleagues did not understand the impact of ‘natural variability’ – factors such as long-term ocean temperature cycles and changes in the output of the sun. However, he said he was still convinced that the current decade would end up significantly warmer than the previous two."

                WHAT THE FUCK???
he doesn't understand the variability of nature or the output of the sun?

and you all want all us to believe your mathematical AGW models of doom are somehow, what, believable?

                  This should help summarize:
                  1. The majority of people believe global warming is human caused.
                  2. the majority of science believes global warming is human caused.
                  3. It is logical to believe, that at some point of pollution/emissions, that the climate would be affected by humans influence. Think about how many volcanoes or meteor impacts or something~ obviously if you put enough shit in the air SOMETHING will happen. Now remember that humans emit 270 times more co2 than all the volcanoes on the earth, equivalent of 11,200 mt kilaueas (Hawaii). Logically, you have to admit that at some point our shit will affect the climate and this is way above the 'natural' level.
                  4. science says that point is about 350ppm of co2~ we are already heading way above that and it will take millions of years for the earth to naturally bring that level back down. Even if you don't believe this number, you must believe that at some point we will feel an effect. We will hit 400ppm next summer and we are projected to hit 800ppm at current rates by 2100. What potential climate issues will my grandchildren have to deal with if we let it get that high?. Should we put up a stoplight before someone dies at the intersection, or should we wait for someone to die?.

Obviously putting back into the grid is another subject, but distributed generation is certainly helpful compared to only a few central generation facilities.
As I mentioned, more potential sources of electricity generation can strengthen our nation and help us avoid issues - particularly which can be apparent after storms. Sure, you could rely on the local monopoly for reliable service on antique infrastructure, or have some options available.

More importantly, it’s showing that when your power comes from the sun, you don’t have to wait for the power company to fix it.

Two weeks after Hurricane Sandy, parts of Queens that still lack electricity, like the Rockaways, face a pretty basic impediment to getting electrified once more: “There’s no grid,” says Robert Gardner, a clean energy campaigner for Greenpeace. “It doesn’t exist. The notion of centralized electricity generation”--that of big power plants providing juice to homes and businesses through a network of power lines--“is moot.”
And similarly, hybrid vehicles provide interesting opportunities. They are already thinking about making plug-ins help manage electricity loads, but some Prius drivers used theirs to get through snow storms or the aftermath of Sandy: http://johnhanger.blogspot.com/2012/...-by-sandy.html

Sakala is an example of America's greatest strength--its educated people who are entrepreneurial and free to fix problems and make life better.
                    {...}
And that package is going to insure their success as well as boost further distributed generation and decentralization of the grid.
I don't think anyone would claim that America's greatest strength is ignorance, the ability to deny facts, and wait until a problem cripples us to deal with it.

And Duke is testing on-site energy storage by recycling EV batteries:

Lithium-ion batteries often have 70 percent or more of their useful life when they’re no longer usable in electric vehicles, GM says. GM and ABB began work two years ago on ways to reuse their energy storage.

A demonstration Wednesday in San Francisco gave a hint. Five used Chevrolet Volt battery packs were repackaged into a unit that could power three to five average homes for two hours.

Duke envisions battery systems smoothing out the sudden swings in output from solar photovoltaic systems, said senior project manager Dan Sowder, helping the grid work more efficiently.

Scientists have come up with an explanation for the 1200-year-long ice up also called the big freeze, the last major cold age on Earth.

Geo scientist Alan Condron of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, along with Peter Winsor at the University of Alaska, have concluded that a climate-cooling period known technically as 'Younger Dryas' or just 'Big Freeze', occurred after glacial Lake Arassiz, at the southern edge of the Laurentide ice sheet covering Hudson Bay and much of the Canadian Arctic broke through an ice dam and pumped in thousands of cubic miles of fresh water into the ocean.
After three decades of brain storming and debate, scientists have zeroed in the cause of big freeze that engulfed Europe and North America.

If any of you hippies are still reading this I found a nice little pinterest (lol)

                            http://pinterest.com/visualoop/clima...-infographics/

I will be posting these in random places for the next decade.

Also looking at this one here:
                            http://www.abc.net.au/innovation/env..._timeline.html

And click on 'the future'. It gives a few scenarios for what level we can get our shit together....but because we have already put so much out there already most of this will happen anyway.... so even if we stopped all emissions today most of this will still happen. All the fixes are just 'less bad'.

                            2.4-4.0C temp rise
                            .2-.59M sea level rise
Ocean acidity is increasing from ph8.1 to 7.7-7.9
                            9-31% species committed to extinction
all corals expected to become bleached
47% rainforest loss, 50% tundra loss, corals to be ovverun with algea

                            woops.
