Just to play devil's advocate, because it's not suited to close quarters combat. A handgun or shotgun is much more effected in the confines of your house.

Common misconception. If your only concern is destroying the target, then yes I'd pick a shotgun over an AR15. However if you have any need for concern for collateral damage, the shotgun is the last choice I'd pick.

In close quarters a shotgun will have much less collateral damage. Personal defense loads in a shotgun will only spread about 2-3 inches at 5 yards. And if you are using a lighter load it will only penetrate about 7-8 inches. I have seen a FMJ .223 round punch through 1/4 inch steel plate at 20 yards. So that one bullet just traveled through the attacker through your 50" plasma and into your neighbors living room taking out their annoying pomeranian fluffy. My brother is local police in a high crime per capita city and I have seen picture of what personal defense rounds in close quarters do out of a 9mm hand gun and other than gaping holes there was little to no collateral damage.

I disagree that a rifle is a better home defense gun.

That is unless you live in a palace with 150 yard hallways.

While yes you can have over penetration issues with a 223 caliber I have seen live testing of it, and it will start to tumble after passing though just 1 layer of drywall, this makes it highly unlikely to pass out of you house and thought the neighbors out side walls though their interior walls and wipe out the TV and Fluffy . Like I said 1st thing I am going for past the pistol in or on the night stand is a 12ga with 00 in it. And while your right with in H/D ranges your not going to get much pattern spread, you can still end up with LOTS of over penetration from a High brass Shotgun round.

For H/D why on earth would you shoot low recoil/managed recoil rounds like most "personal defense" and LE shot gun rounds. For home defense you want wide open full power high brass rounds for what your weapon is chambered for, Preferably 3" mag. The Damage 1 round of 00 or #4 buck or even a slug is going to do at 10-30 feet is going to require the professional cleaners to show up to take care of it, its going to leave meat parts all over. There is a reason the Germans wanted to BAN the 12ga rem1897 after WWI they are brutal at close range.

All that said I still would not hesitate to pick up a M4/shorter AR variant for home defense as they fill that role very well also with a little practice. I would really like to have a SBR PS90 for H/D though............................................ .

I wouldn't be running fmj for that very reason.

I don't know about you and your house, but mine doesn't have 7-8" thick solid layer walls. Punching through two layers of drywall and into whatever is on the other side is a real concern for me. I'm not saying that my choice in home defense is the only way or even the best way, it's just my choice after taking everything into consideration.

If passed S-150 (fienstiens federal AWB) contains a provision with in the grandfather clause that says any of the Named or included banned weapons can never be transferred and must be surrendered to the govt upon my death. My wife cant keep them, I cant pass them to my brother, or my children, or anyone else I may see fit to bequeath my lawful owned property too.

Stop investing in assault-weapon companies, L.A. City Council tells its pension funds

The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday called for the city's three pension systems to divest of investments in companies that produce or profit from the sale of assault weapons and ammunition.
The 12-0 vote on the proposal from Councilwoman Jan Perry comes in response to the shootings in Newtown, Conn. It was a nonbinding request from the council, but the city's three pension systems said they are studying the issue.
But the proposal turns out to be more complicated than looking at pulling back just from gun makers. It will also involve the city's investments in mutual funds that own stock in weapons companies and retailers such as WalMart, Krogers, Dick's Sporting Goods and Big 5 that sell firearms along with their other items.
In just the Los Angeles City Employees Retirement System alone, the investment in gun manufacturers and ammunition companies is about $6.9 million. But the investment in retailers - primarily through mutual funds - is more than $150 million.

Perry said a number of other cities, including Chicago and New York, are making similar reviews and the state's two largest pension systems, CalPers and CalStrs, also are looking at possible divestment.

Which is fucking stupid of those pensions, they are supposed to be divested in the best possible asset growing manor as possible, to protect those funds and insure they will be there when they are needed. Being its public sector union pensions, all the more reason to protect them so the tax payers are not left on the hook even more than they already are.

Imagine for a moment that wolves were a pervasive problem across the country.

We were left with contending at any given moment a solitary wolf slipping into the school yard, play ground, or birthday party and attacking children. The public out cry began to build and the government in all of it's infinite wisdom decided it should step in.

After much conferring with people who knew nothing about wolves and had never seen a wolf decided that the only real answer was to not risk another child's life. From the Senate to the White House a solution was provided.

Every domestic dog that weighed over 25lbs was to be rounded up and slaughtered.

Dog owners and lovers became enraged "our dogs are not wolves", yet the Government responded "we have talked with experts and have concluded that since dogs are all descendents from the wolf we can not afford, for the sake of the children, to risk what we see as ticking time bombs in our homes. We feel that every dog lover can be reasonable and accept that dogs 25lb and under can keep the average dog lover happy".

The public pointed back "but what are you going to do about the wolves coming out from the woods and attacking our children?"

Of course such a question could not be effectively answered because wolves are wild and one does not know where they all live.

Dogs on the other hand live in homes and have rabies tags and there are records where they live.

Such is the philosophy of gun control.
