This is just a general question as to why you feel america is failing as a whole. Not on any one issue.
My general feel is that it simply comes down to us, not the government. Being that the government is a reflection of the country as a whole, and vice versa. We as a country have become scarred of the people we elect. At some point in our history we went from running the gov to letting it run us. We've become sheep simply burying our heads in the sand and hoping that the next elected official will somehow make things better. Or figuring that if it doesn't effect you personally than why worry, when the fact remains that no matter how small the issue, it effects us as a whole.
I've been lucky enough to get to travel the world to decent extent. And no matter where I go I'm always surprised at how active people are in their governance compared to us. When other populations are getting screwed as a whole they come together for change. Irregardless of their personal views on the subject. We on the other hand can't and won't do that. We find it easier to voice our opinions among each other on the net, but never taking it to the street where it would actually do something. We had a proud history of activism (civil rights, women's rights, racial equality, ect), and now we ostracise people for doing it (occupy, glad, ect.).
We all hope for the best, but it seems like in america no one is willing to actually do something about it. I think this lack of balls as a population is doing nothing but pushing us towards the exact things we fear the most. In the end we have the country we ultimately deserve, for it's our own inaction that has led to the current state we live in.
