The Founders went out of their way to never use the words "God" and "Jesus" in the Founding documents, except to remind others our laws and government were specifically not based on the Christian religion. And that happened 80 years after the notorious Salem Witch Trials. Now, there were some Christian values and morals in action.
America is stuck in a rut. Its leaders both in its Legislatures and in its corporations are obsessed with money and greed, and care little for the workers. No one, not even the richest of the rich are incentivized to pay for the infrastructure, so it crumbles. Science and technology rule the future, but our so-called Conservatives deride scientific inquiry and elevate superstition and the supernatural to places of importance. No one need look farther than Georgia's Paul Brown, who is on the state's committee for Science, Space and Technology who openly stated:
"God's word is true. I've come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the big bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell," said Broun, a member of the House Science Committee. He believed, he said, that the Earth is only 9,000 years old, and that the Bible is the “the manufacturer’s handbook" which "teaches us how to run all of public policy and everything in our society.”
There's your decline right there. Men of vast and proclaimed ignorance compounded with gross scientific illiteracy are established in the halls of law.Comment

The marketing point is def true. To go along with that, reality tv. When society believes that simply watching other people's "life" on tv is considered having a life of their own it's a sad state. Beyond the fact that most of these crap shows are nothing more than a revamped game show and people figure that by simply being an asshat you should be entitled (i.e. win) to wealth, fame, and fortune. Why be a productive member of society when you can make millions by being a douch.
That and "saved by the bell", simply cause it ruined saturday morning cartoons.Comment

It's like what happened to the Arab world pre-Islam. They were leaders in mathematics, astronomy, science.. then fundamentalists took them back to the stone age.
Unfortunately many of these nations remain in the stone age, kept there under the archaic rules and ultra-conservative, ass-backwards interpretations of otherwise meaningless doctrine.. sound somewhat familiar?
Like I said. We are dooming ourselves by not realizing that what has happened before will happen again... or refusing to change, in spite of the evidence.Comment

In complete agreement here. When I hear Conservatives speak of how superior a society based on religion would be, I always recommend they look to Iran. Rampant superstition, clerical control, raging nationalism and a well-inculcated fear of "the other", including secular art, homosexuality, the West, just to name a few.It's like what happened to the Arab world pre-Islam. Fortunately, because we still have a mainly secular legal system, religions cannot imprison or torture people in America. This ability in some other cultures, which has allowed near total control in many Muslim and other repressive regimes (See Rwandan genocide, aided and abetted by none other than the Catholic Church) would likely be met very unfavorably in the US. That doesn't prevent GOP/Religious Right types from salivating over the prospect of rounding up kinds of people they don't like and consigning them to death.
I was speaking to an openly religious person recently who was complaining about how Christians can't have their law (Ten Commandments) posted in courtrooms. Never mind the First Amendment forbids it, and he would not be inclined to tolerate the articles of Sharia posted next to them in the name of religious freedom, I asked, "why not enforce ALL the Old Testament teaching of the need to kill those who work on the Sabbath and such?" "Oh", said he "that's part of the Old Covenant and Jesus' death began the New Covenant. I asked "You do know the Ten Commandments are part of the Old Covenant, right? So they don't apply, according to your own statement, right?" He didn't like where this was going and told me I just "didn't understand". I said, "Look, Jesus DID issue a "New Commandment" : treat everyone else the way you want to be treated and I would be just fine with having that one posted at the courthouse!
These types of people dream of "taking America back". I have to wonder.....how far back?Comment

For the most part people against progression would have us living in the dark ages. That time period is a prime example of what happens when anti progressive sentiment is the ruling party.
Science=bad. So no cars, electricity, indoor plumping, internet, communication, or pretty much any technology that moves man kind forward. You know, all the stuff we love today. Not to mention all the medical advances we have. We'd be back to blood letting and leeching. Cutting off limbs instead of using antibiotics to cure infection. Got cancer, S.O.L., along with any other disease.
It's the thought of being left behind and singled out. And the loss of the scraps of power they hold so tightly to. As well as giving them excuses to hold onto their racism and bigotry, because true progression means moving beyond what their myopic points of view allow.
You cannot move human existence forward without progression. As the world moves forward so must the views of it. Otherwise we are simply doomed to constantly repeat the mistakes of past generations, learning nothing from it.
You want modern day antiprogressive culture, look no further than iran, north korea, and most of the civil war ravaged area's in africa. Is that what you really want?Comment

2761377, it's simple to spin it. Or more correctly clarify it. The founding fathers were all freemasons, wherein their beliefs are not based on the judeo-christian structure of religion. When they use the term "Nature's god" they are not speaking of the christian idea of god. Simply the existence of a "supreme being", wherein this belief occurs threw all religions. Even those of pagan and multi-deity beliefs. It's only people like you that misconstrue such statements to fit their own personal agenda and idea's.
This comes down to the simple fact people treat religion as a buffet. Choosing what bits and pieces to believe in simply to justify their actions. Organized religion is the greatest threat to human existence. But don't mistake religion as faith, they are mutually exclusive. Faith allows people to live with a hope that things happen for the greater good. Where as religion allows people to justify atrocity, look no further than the spanish inquisition. Where the church themselves slaughtered more jew's then the holocaust. Even Jesus was against the church, but not faith.Comment
