One in Four Americans Unaware Earth Circles the Sun
[quote=BraveUlysses;4028479]It was a quiz, not a poll. Looks like you can't read either.
first sentence of the article-
"Americans are enthusiastic about the promise of science but lack basic knowledge of it, with one in four unaware that the Earth revolves around the Sun, said a poll out Friday."
whether or not Sleeve can read, you're so close-minded you won't read.
As opposed to hood rats complete disdain for even basic education.....
I never met a Creationist in the ghetto.
Either way, assuming this poll/quiz true, it is disappointing. I'm sure the education system is not solely to blame, culture must play a part no matter who is responding.
Back in highschool I had an earth science teacher to insisted that the reason we have seasons is due to the orbit of earth being an oval, and the earth gets closer and farther from the sun, thus, getting warmer and colder. When pressed about why she thought this, if she knew the earth's axis was tilted, why we didn't have two summers and winters every year (if the orbit was an 'oval' as she claimed), or the fact that the northern hemisphere's summer occurs when the earth is in fact FARTHER from the sun in its orbit, she was dismissive. I walked out, and insisted to be switched to another teacher for the remainder of the semester.
This was an earth science teacher with a masters degree that had an incredibly misinformed concept of the earths orbit, and was passing it on to students year after year. I have no trouble believing that there are many people out there who don't know the earth orbits the sun.

My stance is that the orbit is an ellipses, not an 'oval', and that seasons are due to the tilt of the axis.
This teachers stance was that the earth got closer and farther away from the sun in its orbit, and that is why we had seasons.
While the earth does get closer and farther from the sun in its orbit, the norther hemisphere (where most of us r3vers are located), experience summer while the earth is at the point in its orbit where it is farther from the sun, and winter when it is closer, which is the exact opposite of her claim.
I'm not sure if that somehow wasn't clear in my original post, or what contrary information your link includes.

I misunderstood too. Sounded like your teacher was correct and you were disagreeing.
That said, I believe we're all on the same page now. I would have done the same thing.

Anyways, mustangs are gay and mini vans are faster than your car, you just have to deal with that.
If I got a phone call for a survey I would say stupidest stuff just for entertainment.
These surveys are worthless except for the people who want to twists things in their favor.
