yeah, I don't think so.
while we make fun of this situation, it makes one seriously wonder what the cause is. is it cultural? political? lack of funding for education? genetics? willful ignorance?
I've seen so many science articles where the comments are "science is full of shit" and "what a waste of money". When they are using the internet, computers, GPS navigation, uh, pretty much everything we have today is because of science.. yeah, what a waste!Need parts now? Need them cheap? steve@blunttech.com

Again, people with posts like freeride53 would benefit from actually basing comments on data and facts. The demographic breakdown of science knowledge, albeit a different question set:
Most Americans express at least a passing interest in news about science, with 35% saying they enjoy keeping up with science news “a lot” and another 41%
Poor people (presumably more often in poor townships with poorer schools) did a lot worse than people who are better off.
Geographically, the South did worse than West or Northeast.
Towards nando: Now, general education may be different than say specific views about particular topics that may have been founded on biased sources, such as the anti-vaccine crowd which subject their well-off children to risks of diseases long controlled in developed societies by choice and Bill Gates is working to empower poorer nations to be able to do what we take for granted and some abstain from here. Same with political attacks of scientific funding to study worm sex - it is specific ignorance not general science knowledge but still harmful to society.
