You obviously don't have a family with children that look to you to keep them safe. That was the point that I decided I needed to take this seriously. It's easy to say "if things went to shit I wouldn't want to live anyway" but try telling that to your 2 year old that just wants to stay warm/cool with something to eat/drink. It goes back to the whole taking responsibility for yourself thing that so many people don't consider a worthy attribute anymore. You can troll it all day long, but being prepared to care for your loved ones shouldn't be a fringe mentality.

Actually, I just read the thread. I only read the first post before and thought you guys were loonies. I still think you're loonies, but being prepared is obviously a good thing.Last edited by einhander; 09-16-2014, 07:26 AM.2011 1M Alpine white/black

I don't think being prepared for a natural disaster is crazy. having a bunker filled with 10,000 rounds of ammo and a 5 year supply of dried food is a bit extreme, but there's always the possibly of being without power for an extended time.
it's been more than a decade but we had a winter storm knock out power for almost 2 weeks back in the '90s. fortunately our house was heated with a wood stove so we were able to keep warm and cook, and we still had water. it still sucked though. also it was a blizzard so you couldn't drive anywhere to get supplies even if you wanted to.
actually I probably need to be better prepared, especially with 2 small kids.
having worked at a grocery store, people get used to there always being food there. I kind of have a theory about people who basically think that food availability is infinite because there always is more at the store. What they don't see are the 25 semi trucks filled with food that show up every week to keep the shelves stocked. If the shit truly hits the fan, those shelves would be empty in a matter of hours and if the supply chain is hit it could be weeks before there's anything to replace it with.
actually what would be truly crazy is not having even a basic level of preparedness. it's not like none of us saw what happened after Katrina.Comment

Anyways after the small derailment as usual from einhander let's get a list of items that you all have set up in preparation. Also pictures too if you don't mind of any setups you may have, rv's, vehicles, gun cabinets etc.
My list is short right now
1. 5 gallons of water always on ready in the fridge.
2. Energy and meal supplement bars.
3. Full 5 gallon gas tank
4. Atlas map
5. Simple bow and arrow ( going to replace with a compound)
6. Glass lenses
To come:
1. Cherokee (going to be used for romping on weekends anyway)
2. Camping gear
3. Hunting knife
4. Hatchet/matchete
5. 9mm (2)
6. More food supplies
And to Einhander...this is obviously to be built on.Last edited by slaterd; 09-16-2014, 08:50 AM.Originally posted by Wh33lhopThis is r3v. Check your vaginal sand at the door.Comment

Your list looks good so far, just realize that each person needs 1 gallon of water per day and you can only go about 3 days without water so...make that your #1 priority.
If you can swing it, get a portable ceramic water filter. Personally I have a Katadyn Pocket and it'll filter thousands of gallons of water without needing a replacement. Doesn't filter viruses though, so boiling is still ideal.Comment

5 gallons of water and gas isn't going to get you far. especially in a gas guzzling SUV. I think that's why some people don't take it seriously because some choices don't make any sense. you can't drink bullets.
what are you going to do when your SUV runs out of gas? if it's so bad you need a bow and arrow to feed yourself, it's not like you can just go to a gas station. I'd think it would make more sense to have some hiking gear and camping supplies...
I'd actually really like to take advantage of the energy credits from our local power utility and have solar installed on my house. Unfortunately I'm on awful city water instead of a well like my last place, but at least I'd have power. could always do rainwater collection too.Comment

Pretty much everyone he doesn't agree with. I think it's some complex where he feels empowered by harassing people on the internet because he knows they can't touch him. No better than the children on youtube that talk shit to everyone.
One of our veteran employees at work recommended me to this site. He buys some stuff here and this guy that hosts the site is from Arizona too.
