Homebuilders blame Trump's tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber for driving prices higher in an already tight market

"Homebuilders and potential new-home buyers are getting squeezed from a spike in lumber prices. Tariffs on Canadian lumber are adding to higher costs for wood, which are fueling price increases of up to $9,000 for a new single-family home, according to the National Association of Homebuilders."

this is because every time the US forest service puts up a timber sale for environmental benefit, restoration of native species , selective thinning and or fuels reduction the fucking hippy tards fight it and hold it up in court for a decade plus....

Also there is a huge buliding boom going again and labor costs to build right now are going up, there is a lot more in this than wood costs, as for most average homes the frame packages are still sub 25k..... and they were not NOT 15k 5 years ago. Nice try though

I was under the impression from the quote and from the article that the quoted figure was considering lumber alone. The cost of the house overall could have increased by more than $9000 due to the other factors you mention, labor costs, material shortage, etc.

Now FBI is about to investigating on party techniques that involve absorbing alcohol thru the anus, as well as two guys having intercourse with a woman without having eye contact (because otherwise that would be gay). After all, it was on Brett's calendar under "Boofing" and "Devil's Triangle"... ;-)

"The term was one of several raunchy references in Kavanaugh’s high school yearbook. When questioned at last week’s hearing about the meaning of these inside jokes, Kavanaugh conveniently had an innocent explanation at the ready for each. None, however, was credible."

i can tell you from personal experience that lumber escalated in price in the 1st quarter this year. Canada had nothing to do with it, it was market forces plus the rebuilding of Houston after the hurricane.

My point was why should Canada subsidize their exports of lumber into the USA?

This is Trump's era. A proof that good judgement has left the house a while ago. ;-)

Why do you say it is subsidized? It is another false claim.

The Donald Trump administration is expected to announce countervailing duties on Canadian softwood lumber Tuesday.

"Both resolution panels from the World Trade Organization and under the North American Free Trade Agreement had found that Canadian softwood lumber production is not subsidized."

But if you want to discuss subsidizes, then perhaps we can talk about the US dairy farmers. Three quarters of their profit is subsidized by the US government.

Comparing government support for Canadian versus American dairy farmers is not a simple black and white process. While Canada's dairy sector operates under a regulated supply management system, the U.S. government's support for its dairy farmers is less direct. Support, in its various forms, equaled 73 percent of U.S. dairy farmers' market returns in 2015, according to a report published by a Canadian trade consulting firm on Thursday. The 588-page study by Grey, Clark, Shih and Associates — commissioned by Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) — says the American government contributed around $22.2 billion in direct and indirect subsidies to the dairy sector in 2015. Lead author Peter Clark shared the numbers at DFC's annual policy conference in Ottawa this week. "The...

The report figures support granted to U.S. dairy farmers in 2015 represented approximately C$0.35 per litre — almost three-quarters of producers’ revenue."

“U.S. politicians have been quick to demonize Canada for its different system. Fair trade is in the eye of the beholder. For example, some 41 countries, including the U.S., has WTO approved tariff-rate quotas. The U.S. challenged Canada’s rights to use their quotas within NAFTA over 20 years ago. The U.S. lost. But the U.S. does tend to cast a very broad net when they complain about trade.”

And all the Democrats have come out and said that regardless of the results of the investigation they would vote against.

It's partisan bullshit and it needs to stop on both sides.

‘Tis what happens when man puts blind faith in man. Never put faith in man, one must be moored to ideals, principles, or morales. While absolutely not equating trump to Nazis, this is how societies go off the deep end, and Germany became unmoored. They put blind faith in men, and lost sight of there common sense ability to independently think. Useful idiots, the whole lot of em on both sides.
