My post probably won't contribute as much because I don't have it yet, but I've been researching the same topic, and I decided to with the z3 1.9 lever. My plans for this car is daily driving and attending every autox, track day, drift event I can get my ass too. I also elected to replace all the other shifter components as well. If you look at the realoem.com diagram:

      I replaced #2, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17. I didn't get #19 because I believe it comes with #13. #2 I got from AKG, and #6 of course would be the z3 1.9 shift lever. All the other part #'s I got from pelican parts at a much cheaper price than the dealer.

Hope that helps, again I have not tried this set-up yet, but after my research that was my choice, and from your description we have the same plan for our cars.

Just one but his is a full UUC kit, so... not too helpful.

Thanks for that. After running through like 13 pages in the shifter thread (most posts per page setting) I kinda started to get the feel the 1.9 is the best compromise, and to just replace all the bushings... I haven't made a decision yet though.

Yeah definitely replace all the other parts though, otherwise you may quickly end up with the same amount of slop as you had previously, yes that means more $$ but it's money well spent and probably won't have to be re-spent in a long while even if you change levers.

looks like a B and M shifter..........over the years it was given MANY mixed reviews.

B&M: Feels great, but fragile. Let's just say that it was fun running a race with the shifter coming apart.

Yeah I already have the part numbers from the shifter thread written down, just gotta pick the lever and track down the UUC delrin piece, don't remember which one it is but I saw a few people promoting the UUC bushing in that case.

Where should I be looking for these used lever? Parts cars and such? and I might take a look at some of the info on the 2.8 lever and let you know.

I ran the Z4 3.0 in my ETA and it was no go...got stuck in 2nd LOL ... so I put the Z4 2.5 ... which was great! ... now I'm gonna see if the fitment is better in my 89iS for my Z4 3.0...I have both either way ... once I go with one I'll have a spare...both 1 year old ... minimal usage...

I have the z4 3.0 in my daily driver and hate it. Way too notchy and short. I put a 97 M3 shifter in my track car, and it feels awesome in comparison. Very smooth and up closer to the wheel, with fairly short throws.

I just put the 1st Gen UUC lever in my car yesterday. I really like it so far. Much shorter than stock, but retains the knob height. The top portion of it is adjustable so you can alter the knob height a bit, too.

I'd try to find a used one around if you can.

I don't think I'd use it in a street car, but an AutoSolutions Race shifter is what I went with in my Spec E30 after trying a several other shifters. The only plastic part is the delrin bushing where the ball of the shift lever rides. Everything else is metal-to-metal. It is only a little bit "shorter" a shifter than stock, but because of its construction it is super precise. The down side of the metal-to-metal construction is that it buzzes, which isn't a concern in a race car but would be objectionable on the street.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
