Yes, you can pull them off after you drill the bolt heads off. There is a piece of flat bar connecting the two nuts. The nuts are welded to the flat bar and the whole assembly is removable. Pretty convenient, actually.
I want to change the angle of my steering wheel

It's been a while since I've looked ay my steering coulmn, but is there a way you could bring it towards you about an inch? I'm 6'1 or 6'2" - and I need it closer - just about an inch or an inch and a half with a mtech2 wheel.Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?Comment

I just ordered a 1/2" momo wheel spacer. I didnt see any easy options for extending the steering column itself.

spacer and quick release. That should get you there.. I am 6'1" and had the same problem, installed an NRG quick release, and it bumped the wheel out about an inch, it's much better!1991 325i MT2 Touring (JDM bro)

I did this yesterday. It took me 5 hours of off and on work to get the stupid bolts out.
Heres some suggestions to anyone trying this.
1) Get a GOOD drill bit and drill a hole as deep as you can into the bolt. Then use a screw extractor to turn it out. Works very easy if the hole is deep enough.
2) If you fuck that up, just use a dremel and cut the head of the bolt off. Notching it for a flat head screw driver just doesn't work very well. If you cut the head off, the back plate just comes right out, then you can use a vice grip to turn the bolt out and reuse the back plate.
Hope everyone has an easier time with this than I did. And I really hope it was worth all my trouble, I think it is though.Comment

I'm screwed since I already tried to notch it and use a big screwdriver. now it's damn near impossible to get a drill bit to bite flush. I'll ahve to cut it off eventually, but shelved this project for a while, before getting too frustrated at somethign so simple being such a PITA (and frustrated at why BMW decided to not use freakin regular bolts, lol)Stage rally/rallycross e30 build/competition journal

Anything that would stop you from drilling a hole in the anti-tamper bolts and using an easy out to get them out? Sounds easier than using a dremel to cut a screwdriver slot.
EDIT: aaaand answer right above... that's what I get for skipping page 2.Originally posted by priapismMy girl don't know shit, but she bakes a mean cupcake.Originally posted by shamesonUsually it's best not to know how much money you have into your e30Comment

I did it a different way-
undo the tamper bolts on the body, then make a strap of 1/4" steel with 2 8mm holes spaced
1" apart. Then put them in such that the wheel gets moved in towards
the center of the car a bit (yup, 1/4")
That worked, too.
tnow, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george gravesComment

Go to Harbor Freight and get a $15 4 inch electric grinder and cut a notch in the bolt head. The big cut off wheel make it easy to get up and on the bolt head. Also buy a cheap impact driver if you don't have one(the type you hit with a hammer) and use a flat blade screwdriver impact bit. Hit with hammer and the bolts will come loose. This whole process should take 10 to 20 minutes. Use two longer bolts and use whatever you want for spacers. Two large nuts per side works great as spacers. Install bolts. Done. Easy project.damn....5 hours??

Don't waste your time with drilling it out, you"ll be at it all day.Kevin Doyle
