I've worked on at least a dozen e30 this year where the newbie e30 owner had paid over 5k for the car. All were cars most of us would not buy at any price.
Its a mix of things but the main problem seems to be that most buyers dont know anything about what they are buying.
drifting and the whole hellaflush thing has made e30s cool again for newbs.
this too shall pass.

e30 prices are dumb atm. I let my silver 327i go for 1500 , only because i knew the guy and I wasn't looking to rip anyone off. Now for the alpine i jumped on the trade.

Ive had 5 e30's and the most ive ever paid for one was 1500.
Not because I have one , but right now is the best time to jump on a e36 m3. Prices are at a all time low. Let e30 price go high then in a year or two they will go back down due to the young hipster kids. Same thing happened to the 240sx's. After owning 2 s13's before the hype i was looking for a 3rd but jumped in e30's.

^ What Ben said. I might be getting an e36 m3 tomorrow for under $5k. Wayyyy better deal then getting a 5k e30... well unless it was an M3, but you guys get the point.

I'll buy another e30 when the stance / drift / fast n furious scene moves to another car. Same shit happened with the s14 Nissan's and they are just slowly moving down in price.
