        ... see what I mean ...

In todays boredom, I went from looking at Cayman S to the 135i and ultimately deciding the E30 was still better. This is while I was "working"

I seem to have an oil leak... I wish I could trace it up to the valve cover gasket but I don't see it originating that high. Looks like it's the head gasket but I can't confirm it, not until I clean the area first.

Has anyone ever dropped an entire drivetrain, subframes and all from the E30s? In theory it seems like it would be fairly "easy" to swap it that way. Unbolt subframes (front and rear) and other stuff like the tie-rods, exhaust, fuel lines, c101, etc . This is assuming that you have a lift. My mind wanders while at work and just got curious. Ive seen people do it with the fronts alone, but Im wondering about front to back, the whole thing

Yeah, gotta clean all that stuff up real good. Even then it's hard to spot unless it's a fairly big leak. I had to remove my compressor, clean everything and let the engine run while looking underneath just to find the source.

Yes, you can. That's how my buddy does it at the shop with a custom bench on wheels. That's probably how BMW did it on the assembly line. I've seen them remove the strut nuts on top and remove the entire front subframe/engine with struts and wheels! Some people do it on the ground while lifting the car up with an engine hoist. Once it's all out, everything becomes much easier to work on. I'd do that if I were changing everything at once.
