If it's out of or low on freon there's a leak. I would try to address that first.

I'd say most of these cars have a disgusting mix of r12 and r134a along with black o-rings that are bound to leak *sigh* Sometimes the compressor leaks on these too

It's been rather cool lately, was it actually warm enough somewhere to need it?

Unfortunately you can't eyeball it, so just hope the machinist says it's good and you pay for minimal time.

not passing? Or just hating the fact that you have to smog your cars?

                              Just the hassle lol

I've had the car for a few years now and nothing has changed on it that would effect the emissions.

The guy I've been taking it to is super anal now. I replaced my cat with an aftermarket one, which is not legal in cali, so he doesn't want to do it anymore even though he's known about it since he first smogged the car years ago.

So now I might have to get it "passed" which is going to suck, because I know it will pass a sniff. We'll see what happens friday when I take it to a friends shop. That stoner probably won't give a fuck about the aftermarket cat.

Ahh, yeah, the BAR has been hard up on smog techs these days. They're really good at making most guys scared of letting something slip. When I was working as a smog tech, I ran a car on the dyno in third gear instead of second and I got dinged for it. If you take to long, they become curious as to what you're doing, if you're too fast they become even more suspicious. We aren't even allowed to tell a customer they're going to fail because the check engine light's on, just have to run it and fail it. It still amazes me how some people can get away with "passing" cars these days. Glad I don't have to do that anymore.
