And maintenance? I know that can get out of hand on those easily.

That mileage is significantly better than what I average. 18.2

maintenance is different on every car. i'm not too worried about maintenance as long as i know the history of the vehicle and it has been well maintained.

        Travis, you're an idiot.

And even moreso if you think you'll ever see 30mpg in one.

My opinion of buying a car, is buy one that you can afford to buy again right away should shit hit the fan, such as you totaling your car. If you do...no worries, because you already saved up and have the income to fix the worse case scenario. M cars (E36 M3 excluded) get expensive fast.

            how so...?

i never said i would see that. i am just saying this is what people have reported getting while cruising at 55. i was able to do roughly 28 mpg average in the m3 cruising pretty hard at around 65-85 to sd and back with plenty of city driving.

Travis, I have been told to get the later model E39 M5. The early models had an oil consumption issue that was fixed in the later models. Not a big deal if you don't mind putting a little oil in her now and then. The V-8's also like to leak oil so pay attention to this when you look at the car. You can replace the gaskets and seals but it is pretty labor intensive on the V8's. It's a good motor and when I drove my friends manual trans it was a kick in the ass and hard to keep your foot out of it. Pulling the resonators makes is easy improvement for the sound of the car. This is one of the cars I would like to get one day for my wife.

But, the E34 M5 is also one to look at. It is a beast and also a lot of fun to drive. Their are under priced for what you get in the last hand built BMW.

As far as gas goes don't expect either one to get good gas milage but if you want that brute power you gotta pay for it. I would also save a little money to pay for the speeding tickets your going to get. ;) They both go so fast so easy it's hard not to be a target for the Po-Po.

                  Cheers,

                  Jim

haha, thanks jim. i've definitely been doing a lot of reading and it seems like the later ones are definitely improvements and those are the ones i'll be looking at. yeah, i know, it'll be a while before i can actually keep a light foot, but that's okay, i've got to pay to play. haha, i will be hard wiring my radar in there as well to help prevent most tickets haha.

Have you driven one? They are definitely fantastic.

I'd take that over the E46 M3 any day but as mentioned maintenance won't be cheap.

That m tech kit is great mr 325. Ultimately that's what I want on my car. I wish I got the late model ah well.

I wonder if those are still made ... Perhaps it's time to splurge

Question. I have an s52 sapped car which has these huge AKG POLY motor mounts. I basically feel everything the engine does. Would installing regular ones be dangerous? I'd like to isolate myself a little better from the engine movement.

Yes the kit is still available brand new but it's very expensive.

Look at photos of M-Tech 1 early model cars, you might fall in love.

In my old S50 E30 I used E28 M5 engine mounts. Still firm but not annoying. Another option which is most common (and cheaper) is the E28 535i engine mounts. They're not quite as firm as the M5 version.

Has anyone ordered touchup spray paint fro their E30s?

My lip gets pretty battered so I was thinking of having a cheap easy way to repair every 6 months or so.
