ayy so I was some what partially right.Here's the real answer, although Turde was SO helpful! The 88 diving board use shocks specific to that year. They mount with a bolt through the bottom just like plastic bumpers. Totally different design than the 84-87 cars. The 88 diving boards also don't stick out as much as the earlier diving board cars.
Your brother should tuck his bumpers. It will look better. That's what I did on the eS I sold last year.

It's fairly easy. You have to cut off the 2 early model front tow hooks. Also if the late model valance isn't from an 88 you'll need to install the bumper shrouds with self tapping screws. Otherwise it all bolts right in.
No difference in fenders from early to late.Comment

That would explain why I had issues originally mounting the ES valence I put on my car.
