honestly, the miata is probably the perfect 2nd car to strip and track. Then you can enjoy the stock E30 for what it it is.

track cars break and parts can add up quickly. consider tires and pads. you will be replacing those OFTEN if you will be tearing up the track, even worse when you are learning. You will destroy pads and tires until you learn that balance. I havent forgotten the ride in the M235i haha

again, the miata is a better way to go. smaller wheels means smaller tires and smaller tires are cheaper. 15" is where you want to be IMO

exactly what Im saying. I have a BBK in my future because I want to drop unsprung weight also and the added stopping power is a nice bonus.I have a bunch of things I plan on doing to drop weight, sprung and unsprung, but really Im better off spending my money on HPDE instead of $300 carbon fiber mirrors, let alone $1000+ on a BBK.

Kevan, I highlighted the main things to consider with track day brakes.
At first I felt justified with the purchase. I would be paying a lot for peace of mind. But now that I'm hearing more, and ingesting all the considerations (thank you to all), now a BBK seems premature.

As a side note, I am easily influenced on topics in which I know little.

Regarding the miata, it must be sold soon. I'm moving and cannot house 2 cars anymore. Also for financial reasons, I cannot maintain/insure 2 cars. I would looooove to strip it/build it/track it, and I have sooo many examples to follow. But I can't.

The miata itself is also mostly stock. Its two upgrades are tires and sway bars. Honestly the two BEST upgrades I could have chosen.

My boss has been saying the same thing; tires and brakes. He reminded me that SpecE30 runs stock brakes too. So like you guys are saying, good pads, rotors, and fresh fluid shall satisfy a solid track day. And keep up on all maintenance, obviously.

So I've been talked down to that. Replace the master with a good solid unit, upgrade those items, & add in some new stainless lines. I do also want to rebuild the calipers... I just want to, just for peace of mind.

Regarding my first real track day, I've been highly recommended to use a rental. I trust in my boss greatly, he knows best, this has been his life. What I need is seat time, and I asked why the car I use isn't important, why practicing in my car isn't important. He says the experience of sitting at the wheel and testing myself & my ability is far more valuable than testing the car's ability with me controlling it. (that's my interpretation of it).

To be a good driver means you know how to drive. You aren't specific to one car. You are specific to being able to control any car with your ability to drive it well. As an example, The Stig (Top Gear) is a good driver. A good driver uses his knowledge to determine how to best handle the car (although there is that factor of practicing with a great many amount of cars).

That's what I want most, the skill. The tool is only a tool.

I don't necessarily agree with that.

I know my car better than anyone else does. Which is to say I'm a lot more comfortable in my own car than I would be in someone else's. I know its nuances and idiosyncrasies; I know how it's going to behave in some - but certainly not all - situations.

it was the car I'm renting is nearly identical to mind in those make, model and setup, I don't really have any idea how it's going to react or behave. I would much rather have that comfort level of being behind the wheel of my own car than the nervousness of being behind the wheel of someone else's.

Rentals are fine for wheel to wheel events if you don't own a racecar. But for track days, I'll take mine over anyone else's every time.

I originally thought about it the same way too. Seems logical, ya know? You master the tool you have. You and the car grow together. But when you become sentimental, dependent on the tool, you naturally become hesitant to learn a new one. You won't feel confident taking the reigns of a new machine.

It's my choice to be well versed. Yes I want to build my car up to suit me. But as I'm starting out, the vehicle is less important than me. I need to improve, then I need to know how to improve my car as we develop. And I want to experience other cars to understand how they work, and apply what I learn to mine.

Very profound but the bottom line is seat time. I've done many hpdes and years of autox. Lots of different cars over the years.

Best car is your car. You should start with an autox in your car. Speed Ventures has fairly inexpensive events at auto club Speedway with lots of runs unfortunately the course is fairly small. But again, the goal is seat time.

Edit: I want to elaborate on why driving your car is a better bet.
Let's be honest with ourselves here, you are a novice or beginner level driver on track and in life in general.

These events, be it on track or autox, are great opportunities to see what your car does in different types of situations that you normally would not encounter in street driving. It's very interesting and educational to know what happens and how your car reacts to "survival" moments. Like dodging debris on the freeway, losing your tail in some water, understeering into a turn, etc. Which is why I say autox is a good entry point, you see what happens to your car with minimal risk. Smash some cones, no big deal.

It's also a lesson in what your car is truly capable of. You need a benchmark, it wouldn't make much sense to rent a brand new car with modern abs, different acceleration, different balance, different tire size, different steering ratio and THEN drive your car on the track later on down the road? For what? Only time I've rented a car and run it hard at an event was when I wanted to take it for a real test drive vs around the block with a sales person in the front seat.

I'm watching the fight at a Filipino household so this should either be really fun or shitty.

In an amazing turn of events... I'm going to autocross today. My car. Fontana Auto Club Speedway. Should be fun.

                      RIP in peace cones.

The fight was good, its just the call that was garbage. Pacquiao took the fight in my opinion.

honestly I think pacquiao never had the fight. The judges were looking for his aggression, but it never came. When he had some burst it just turned into a hug fest.

The same spacer that comes in a stock car's steering wheel setup, so check out real OEM. You just stack them.
