First things first. Spend 70 bucks or whatever it is and get an engine hanger that can rest on the fenders (harbor freight sells them). The legs of a typical cherry picker are going to probably get in the way when it comes time to unbolting the subframe. If you can swing it, do a few jobs while the subframe is out (new subframe bolts would be a good idea). Put new control arms and bushings in, especially if the inner and outer ball joints are toast on your existing one, and do the e36 rack swap as well (one of the better things you can do to the car in terms of driving feel).

On an airbag car (m20 at least.....yours may be different), you can get away without trimming the firewall for the e36 rack if you switch the spacer orientation (meaning spacers sit under the rack, as opposed to on top of the rack). On a 24v swap however, the e34 oil pan does not all for the clearance of raising the rack higher, so you'd have to dremel/trim the firewall opening as to avoid a binding and grinding noise from the steering shaft.

Another "while you're in there" part to get would be the steering guibo itself as it's probably trashed and mushy from 20-some years of use.

Sorry, I turned your simple project into a $500+ adventure........but that's what comes with owning these cars I suppose.

What started out as a bushing refresh/steering rack swap turned into a timing belt a/c delete, cruise delete, oil pan, timing belt ss lines LSD/6 speed swap into me.

One of those "since it's apart" kinda deal.

Don't put them under the rack...
It's downright dangerous to drive in rain and the bump steer/toe steer/(lack of) steering response is pretty noticable in a bad way; your roll center will be permanently eff'd

        Just put it up top..

Sina I have this exact thing taking up space in my garage. Text me about it.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

              Gawd dammit.

Hate to be a bum before you guys, but I threw in the towel.
This is because I am unable to get my hands on all the parts needed to fix the car before I have to drive back to San diego on the 3rd.

Ditching the e30 in Alameda and taking the 240 with me.

I'll be collecting parts. I already have a new subframe sitting on the passenger seat.

              I need a new:

              Steering rack
              Tie rod ends
              Control arms
              Sway bar bushings
Oil pan and gasket (in the post)
              Steering rack guibo
              Engine mounts x2

              i have e30 m3 cabs but don't have a press. :(

Get some new E28M5 mounts. Cheaper than stock and awesome. I wish I had gone with these originally, rather than the rattle-box Vorshlag bits.

I know of a guy parting out in SJ. I think he might have all the parts you need. He has a thread going in the classifieds as well. Good luck! http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=340340

Happy Holidays everyone! Im hoping to get my 327i completed the next couple of weeks but autohauz is delaying my cam seal oring and exhaust studs!
