We should at some point. My E30 is off the road because I'm not taking it anywhere near one of these new STAR smog checks with an ITB setup. I want to wind up with an alu M52-based engine next, like you have, and that's one of the things that having a reliable daily enables me to do, but I need a CARB-legal upgrade path that doesn't involve OBD2.
Mine has been totally reliable, theres been a few things here and there, but Ive put 30k miles on my Alu M52 and its S52 quick and gets 25-28mpg. Im a happy chap.
I will hit you up next time Im in the bay area

You and Nate can probably both answer this - I have a strong aversion to OBD2.
I can do a direct swap from an M50TU car, take it to the ref, and then build a nice Alu M52 engine later, and run it from the OBD1 ECU, right?

Yup. that's how the obd1 s52 cars are run. Essentially all the obd1 pieces from the m50 are swapped onto the obd2 long block. Probably worth getting a custom chip made for the m52 and whatever mods you plan to use for the 413 ecu, that way it runs optimally.
Ill let you know how much they bug me about my "M50"
Ah you did everything at once... gotcha.
I think I do want to take the safe route and just swap everything from an M50TU car first - I'll still get a little extra bonus from my M42 single-mass flywheel and can do a chip without worrying about the ref.
Once I'm past that crap, I'm pretty sure a smog guy is never going to blink at the difference between M50 and M52.
Nothing was ignorant about that. as nate said, opinionated, but true in my world. if you buy a car for fun, let it be fun. accelerating slowing isnt fun.
my mk4 handled as well as my e30 on the KW v2s, still not fun to drive.
Branden's vet, turns like shit, but i loved every second in it. i've driven a s38b38 e30m and that is the engine that it should have come with.
