yesterday and today, i've been cleaning an AiResearch T3 that saw use on a 524td for 20+ years and then sat in a box for 5.
after lots of scrubbing and soaking the center section in oil overnight, seems like it's still good; not "very little" axial play, but fucking -none-.
thinking about it, this is kinda depressing.
we used to make shit in america. we made some of it so well that BMW came to *us* when they needed a high-durability turbo for a diesel app, because it was better (according to whatever their desired criteria was) than what AG-KKK was making down the street over in Deutchland. when you're ordering parts in scales of ten thousands, you don't take lightly the decision to ship them across the planet when there's another supplier not involving sea transport, german tariffs and customs, etc.
now we're a nation of consumers and media addicts (which are just consumers of less-tangible goods).

also, for any of you cali guys thinking of going turbo with a Garrett, take a look at the oil hardlines that come on a 524td.
banjo fitting on the inlet; j-yard cut mine at the rubber part but i think i'm going to get another.
don't know if the drain is quite as useful, but if looking OEM is important to you, both of these are probably worth hunting, rather than buying chinese-made aeroquip knockoffs.past:

It's the lightest and cheapest of the swap engines.. I'm sure with mods you could jump the power output close to 250HP. Building it, I'm sure you can hit 300
S54 would be ideal, and my first choice (333hp!), but I just love how the M30 looks in the bay. It just.. LOOKS right. Plus I'm trying to be a little more realistic.. I'm not gonna be swapping an s54 in ballin on a $10/hr budget
