I went from a 4.56 to a 4.1 in my Alfa GTV and it seemed to like the longer legs quite a bit. That was a torqueless unwonder (rated at 130 hp and 110 lb feet of torque in a 2600 lb car). I can see an M3 working well with the combo. I've thought about doing the same thing myself. It might be a touch slower off the line, but an M3 isn't a drag car anyway. Heck I almost feel 1st gear as it is is too low, but 2nd is too tall to start in. Going from a 4.1 to a 3.9 might be a very good setup. It will give you longer legs on the freeway as well.

          I love Bimmerheads IG!

          On a completely related note..

250-270WHP possible on a built s52 with OBDI and Cams?
I know those numbers running an m54 are very hard to get reviewing dyno charts from e46f, but bimmerforums doesn't have definitive dyno charts to compare to like e46f.

          Reconsidering my swap goals atm

250 is doable without cams with the right header, 260 is easy wih shricks and the right header, 270 has been done a couple times on shricks, but less often.

Sunbelts easily make 270-290 depending on which cam, the new shrick 276/270 looks intriguing, evosports make 290-300, and all of this is without porting or comp bumps or pistons or rods.

Search the bfc e36 m3 dyno thread. It will answer ALL of your questions.

              Awesome
Thanks for that, I'll definitely check it out

Definitely lookin to pour some cash into this swap; I'm thinking rebuild the engine over a course of a year or two slowly acquiring parts here an there. My goal was 250whp, and anything I can get above that was a plus; I'd be ultimately satisfied with 300 crank-HP. It just didn't look like it those numbers were gonna happen in an m54, and the torque curve doesn't look as nice as the s52.

I guess I can sacrifice that extra 40lbs up front for an extra 30HP. Just means my coilover setup is gonna have to be on point

s38 used a 285, just like s14. It bolts up to M30s. 265 is the weirdo, longer, separate-bellhousing trans that was used for 1 year in E28s when they started eating syncros in the early production 260's.

To be pedantic, the S38 actually came with a g280. I think you are correct that G265 will bolt up to an S38, as a lot of S38 guys favor the G265 over the more expensive, less available G280.

                      Naw, S14 used a 265/6 (and the dogleg 265/5 in europe). S38 used g280/5 (and european 95s got the G280/6). M30s were 260/6 and 265/6. There is no 285.

m30 also used the 260/12 and the 265CR

also there's all the 4 speeds

I was pretty sure s14's came with 280's, too..

I think it's clear that we look up transmission spec pages for fun.

265CR is the 265/5 and I think those were only behind M90s?
