E36 or E34 are excellent daily driver. I love my E34 525i manual, but had a few E36 325i manual cars and they were great. Just the right amount of power for a daily and comfy, too. How about a 318i 4 door for $2,000? New head gasket, fairly straight but nothing you'd worry about bumping into something during the snow months.
