I'd say Timing Belt and Water Pump - followed closely but Head Job or E to I swap.

So this is a 91 850i that we serviced 5/29/15. Keep in mind these are our list prices, marked up so we can make profit and stay in business just like we have been doing since 72. It's what it takes to stay in business and competitive out here.
We did headlights
861.70 each - 63 12 1 383 371/63 12 1 383 372
We replaced the driver side seat rail which had to be ordered from Germany. (Seat would not move forward or backward.)
52 10 8 118 128 - 1212.87!!
That's just for parts..
Car is back now for AC work. He's keeping the R12 System. I just paid 1170.00 for a 30LB tank of R12. That's wholesale. God I can't wait to be on vacation.sigpic
4 doors.. so much room for activities!

There are a ton of threads on rear subframe and trailing arm bushing. You can piece together $20 worth of parts from Harbor Freight and the hardware store to make your own tools, rent a puller, and you're in business.
IMO most annoying part is removing the f***ing exhaust!
I called a couple of shops recently and none of them would touch R12 any longer. Government ban them from doing R12 work recently, IDK?
It is a pretty easy job to do yourself. The hard part is finding a vacuum pump and gauges (make sure you get one intend for R12) if you don't want to shell out the money to buy them.Comment

My comment was really directed at kid325e who does it for a living and apparently just bought some R12 for the shop.
I could do it myself, but I don't have a garage and I'm kinda lazy?sigpic

Came to the realization that a 3.73 lsd would be quite interesting with an N54 swapped car. It is now for sale and will be posted shortly, looking for $300 in great working condition.Comment

I've got a (custom) 3.73 in the Death machine, would recommend, loved it. Remember that your transmission ratios impact how you'll like the diff. I'd replace tranny first and then evaluate how you like the revs and such.Alpha Team Inductee

Maybe I'm jumping the gun a little, but you dont see much of the n54/n55 crowd going past a 3.46.. I do like the idea of putting an extra plate in and rebuilding the unit.Comment
