How you can go from this;
to this;
And not just fire every single person on your design staff is beyond me. I get that the 80's were a scramble to the bottom due to the cost of oil and the rise of the cheap import, but it's a fucking sportscar. And a 5.0l (because we also can't do rounding and 4.92 = 5.0) engine producing 210hp? Give me a break. I love Ford and the Mustang, but everything they did in the 80's and early 90's should be flushed right down the toilet.Last edited by ncsubowen; 02-03-2016, 12:23 PM.sigpic

Call up ex-President Carter and blame him..
Look across the board, you had a Firebird with a big block producing what 100hp?
Not sure how old you are, but I remember the dirth of performance - before EFI became the norm.
Everything from the 80's had that look - steel body, plastic nosecone. The Mustang, the Camaro/Firebird, Lotus, Ferrari, AMC, Honda, Datsun/Nissan..
Though, I liked how you used the Mustang II/Pinto-stang as the *better* pic. I think 90% of Mustang owners would feel the opposite.1991 325i MT2 Touring (JDM bro)

First gen was (generally) considered 64.5-74 when they moved it the platform shared with the Pinto. This lasted till '79 when it was moved to the Fairmont chassis (the Fox chassis.) They were Fox bodies until the S95 came out.
Like I said, I had a '79 with the first Turbo motor (carb not FI.) One of my street racing buddies in HS had '77 Cobra. It was a turd. Even with the all the smog removed and a healthy cam in it. The only thing the Mustang II had going for it was the front brakes/steering rack. It was easily adapted to other chassis (i.e Shoebox Nova's, GM trucks..etc.)
I have never been a huge Mustang guy, but they can be made fast easily, and they have a ton of race heritage.1991 325i MT2 Touring (JDM bro)

It's not just a Ford problem, you're 100% correct that everybody was moving to cheap plastics and Pontiac/Chevy/etc were turning out big lumps of carb'd crap.sigpic

I love pretty much all 80s cars. They're hideous but in a good way for me. Plus I also drive a trans am so I definitely have some mullet genes.

That said, this is probably the cleanest e46 wagon I've seen, and if he's correct about the records it's been driven ~70k miles since the swap. That price is clean e46 m3 territory though.
The coolant cap thing is actually interesting, having experienced a coolant hose blowout myself. I'd attribute that more to having 25 year old rubber than anything, but I wonder if something like that would help mitigate the risk of the plastic heater core failing.sigpic
