I could let Drunkensailor speak on this as he would be perfect to answer, but hell even a M20 ETA ~ M20i swap should suffice.

Quick straight forward answer(s) are 1) cost / power ratio 2) Uniqueness 3) We're all cut from a different cloth so we like different things.

Not all 4 cyls lack torque. My MS6 had 400whp/400wtq. Just like not all V8's have gobs of torque.

4 cylinders require forced induction otherwise they are crap, unless you are going for MPG

I agree. My old man works on Kia's. Slow as balls with. Some top end power but zero torque. Excellent gas mileage though, even when you smash on it!!

Kia is probably a bad example of a 4 cylinder but all of what you say is true. M42 got amazing mileage even when i hit 7k in every single gear. Having to retrain myself in the M50. Different strokes for different folks.

If you could put a k20a in a e30 I would do it.. No second thoughts about it, it'd be amazing.

On of my favorite 4 cyl. Is the h22 I owned 2 cars with them. Amazing! But they were FWD
And then another one is ls/vtec b18 non vtec block with b16/18 vtec head! Up words of 190-210 hp on tune!
                            Those engines will rock!

People have been converting the k series motor to rwd setup's.

If I had the budget for it, it would have been done already
