I recently agreed to pay more than the going rate for a set of E38 style 5s from travish325. Considering we're both USAF members and from talking with him he sounded like a stand up guy. He asked me to send him the money as a gift so he wouldn't get hit with the fees and I stupidly agreed, with conditions. I asked that the wheels be packaged extra well and that they be insured, to avoid problems. Well of course, 3 out of 4 wheels made it fine, but the 4th one has a decent bend in it right on the lip where someone dropped it. The wheels were packed in a tight and thin layer of cardboard, no "extra" anything like I had asked for. Now i'll be paying an extra fee on top to have this wheel repaired and/or chasing my tail across town trying to get UPS to pay a claim.

It's the cost of having some kind of protection when buying from people you don't know. Always use normal buy/sell protocols on Paypal unless you absolutely know and trust the other person, and even then you might not want to gift. Another thing the forum can implement to protect buyers is to require seller compliance pics that have a picture of each item or groups of items up for sale with a piece of paper with the seller's user name, date, and forum name. This way the buyer knows the person actually has the item and the item is in the shape the seller claims. It's up to the buyer to ask the seller for and potentially pay for insurance.
I know I'm a n00b here but these are the buy/sell requirements on the many auto forums that I've been a longtime member of, including a couple of which I moderate. They make things a little more difficult for the seller, but it cuts way back on the bullshit. :)1989 325iC ZinnoberrotComment

I've been ripped off before by someone using Paypal and never recovered the funds. I was out $160 and this was about 7-8 years ago. Not sure how they keep people from closing their accounts. They get payment immediately, then immediately transfer it into their bank account, then stall the buyer for weeks while closing their Paypal account...and finally stop responding to emails. This is particularly risky with people overseas as it may take close to a month for an item to get shipped over. If that is the case and the buyer transfers funds out of the account, paypal will put their account in debt and work on getting money from them. Paypal will refund your account with their own "money" and then work on getting money from the "scammer".
Not sure what happens if the seller completely closes down the account howeverComment
