i was thinking of this swap for so long, a S52 OBD-1...i won't lie i don't think i have the knowledge to take the Motor out. i think turboing a M20B25 will be way better, get's better mileage and will still be More Reliable than the S5x/M5x. Don't get me wrong the Power in the M52B28 was more than enough to move my Heavy E36 from 0-60 in 6second. and a turbo M20 sounds so much better.
i just wish i have the Knowledge to do a swap, i would definitely go with the M52B28 over the S52. because i know i will get more than 250,000miles easly out of it. :)
Nice thread, but i would still like to see videos...Originally posted by e30elose the old man bmwcca badge.Comment

Wait, so you think a motor swap is harder then turboing a m20 and more reliable?i was thinking of this swap for so long, a S52 OBD-1...i won't lie i don't think i have the knowledge to take the Motor out. i think turboing a M20B25 will be way better, get's better mileage and will still be More Reliable than the S5x/M5x. Seems like it? it's not like i know how to do both anyways haha.
i even pay for oil changes, yah.....the only work i could do is replace bulbs and install bolt-on parts. i pay for everything to fix my car. my last car coast me over 4000$ just to get it to a nice shape. yah it coast alot of money, but i don't know since i sold my old 325e i feel so lazy or scared to break stuff when i do anywork on my cars. Hell i didn't even let a mechanic touch that car. i even replaced the whole coolant system and did a major tune-up on it.
i guess because it was my first car? you know what they say about first cars.....
for my current car, i want to do some work on it, but i am still scared of screwing somthing then regreting it later. i am talking of my own Experience and knowledge. i know maybe this will make me sound like such a Noob or whatever, but i would rather have someone who's professional to do it. Maybe me paying other people to fix my cars what lead me to sell everycar i own within the first 4-5 months of Ownership. Maybe if i start doing actual work my self and rench more, i would love the car to death and be so attached to it.
also about the E30 turbo comment, i know of a local guy, He's even Running the Ebay turbo kit, and he had no troubles or whatever with it. the only think he did to be on the safe side, is Replace the Stock HG with after market one and installed APR headstuds.
again i am still noob and willing to learn. :pLast edited by bimmer_E30; 01-17-2010, 11:24 AM.Originally posted by e30elose the old man bmwcca badge.Comment

everyone is totally entitled to their own opinion but could you explain how you would ever get a S5x or M5x up to $5k in rebuilding costs? I rebuilt no less than 30 of these and its never costed me 1/2 that. maybe your parts are more or your paying for labor? to have a turbo'd vehicle does not mean you need a fully rebuilt motor or the greatest engine management. if done correctly and not much more than a few $k a great street machine can be built that no S5x swap could touch unless your a stop light to stop light guy.All of the above. To rebuild an M/S5X motor the RIGHT WAY will probably cost you around $5k. Then there's the cost of everything needed to get said motor into the car and then you're going to add boost and engine management. You'll have a $10k motor before you know it and I'm sure you could have had just as much fun with a $3k S50 swap...

I just swapped an M50 into an '87. I had to make an adapter which consisted of making about 8 connections, then tach and fuel consumption (and I believe road speed) are separate from the C101 for me. So, I need 3 more wires. That's the extent of the wiring. It's really not as hard as people make it out to be.paint sucksComment
