even tho i was using the same flywheel and oilpan as my last 2 setups, there was no clearence for the flywheel to spin. took the trans off and put in a flywheel spacer and it started right up.

i think this thread can be very useful to many people. covers the little things not in the DIY's that people mess up.

No power actually getting to the ECU from the big ol' green ignition wire thru the c101. It was very deceiving too...the multimeter showed 12v when keyed up, and everything looked right. There was a poor connection as far as current-carrying capacity goes and once I used a test light, which actually draws some amount of current, I was able to find that the wire connection through my adapter was inadequate. Hope that helps some one! Use a test light when troubleshooting electrical things...voltage may not be enough!

              Solution: ground the ecu
Thats not good, having the current of all the sensors pass through the ecu will eventually destroy it and cause other gremlins. It will also cause voltage offsets and sensor accuracy to be off.

                  1992 m50 (auto e34) into 1989 325i

                  Problem: crank but no start

Solution: I had "drive-away protection" (pin 81 at the DME connector, pin 7 at the x20) connected to my e30 c101 "service indicator reset" (pin 11). This caused a no spark, no fuel situation. As soon as I cut pin 7 on my c101, it fired right up!

Also, in order to use the service indicator lights, I ran pin 11 on the c101 to pin 19 on the x20. Service lights fully function now!

Problem: Strong crank then main relay would turn on and it would try to fire then bog way down and slow crank

Solution: Some dicktard put an m50nv harmonic balancer on it which has the timing mark in a different spot.

5 bad fuel injectors. Only 1 cylinder fired. Replaced all the injectors and now she runs great.

No power to main relay. DME wasn't grounded. Touched it to the studs on the shock tower and it fired right up.

I never thought much of a DME ground, since my E34 harness didn't need one, but they have a lot more physical grounds than the E36 harness, and the E36 all grounds through the DME and the single ground wire. Rookie mistake, I guess :)

I cannot stress this enough, if you are using an E36 harness, ensure your DME is properly grounded.

I got water in spark plug holes on my first start. Cleaned that out and she started right up.
