    s54 carbon airbox

I am trying to find the best way to fit the Turner airbox (carbon) on my e30 m3 s54 swapped race car.

The car has been racing like this for 10+ years and everything works really well so I would like to change as little as possible.

The airbox snorkel and the upper rad hose want to occupy the same space. I think there are 3 options:

#1 Weld a hard union at 90 degrees and run a straight hose
#2 Different radiator (maybe a z3M) with conventional hoses
#3 Go with a custom radiator or the Chase Bays tucked rad option
#4 Break out the sawzall and hole-saw......#becauseRaceCar

I am not sure #1 or 2 will give enough space to clear without clearancing the trumpet of the snorkel. I like option 3 the least as on the race car there are a bunch of items (oil cooler, P/S cooler and ducting that will all be effected and given the car is dead reliable and fast I am hesitant to change what is basically a very good and proven package.

Does anyone have a definitive solution for the Turner box and e30 / s54?

    Thanks

    Ill start with my thoughts.

I don't care to much for the Turner box, The Bimmerworld supplied boxes have shown to make good power.

The Bimmerworld supplied boxes can be plumed better to a high pressure area.

The E46 Radiator M radiator is smaller than the E36 M radiator.

I don't think these cars need bigger radiators, just better aero. (Inlet & Exhaust airflow of the coolers)

Chase Bay radiator may not be as efficient, Weight is further forward and now a new cooling pack is required.

Can you move the engine back? My answer is in the second line.

Seems like cooling is always a huge concern for a track/race car.
If your cooling setup is working well, I would be hesitant to swap/modify it, unless you are okay with potential issues arising.

I would personally be more concerned with sucking hot air off the back of the radiator with the current intake location.
I saw a significant IAT increase on my datalogs when running an unshielded cone filter. I even switched to a GM IAT sensor, and then pivoted the filter up into clean air (hood was off) to confirm my results.

      EDIT:
Specific details in Post 290 of my build thread:

Heh... I was going to say I'd never had much trouble with cooling...
then I thought, 'well, except for the brakes, that is...'

What class does a 3.2l E30 run in?

        My experience has been that
airflow and plenums (plenae?) matter far more than
        the path the coolant takes.

Adding some volume (as in, 'it's not a pretty elbow, but it's big enough not to be a restriction')
never messed with cooling, whereas the bigger airbox idea murdered lap times to the point where we
ran without one for a weekend, dust, rocks and ducks be damned.

So I guess, if you've proven that air box, (or others have) then I'd mess up the water flow
before I messed with the air flow...

that said, the 'bigger airbox' had a 'perfessinal tooner's' name on it, and was made of Farbin Kaiber, too.

the replacement is buttugly, made of fiberglass, and is as fast as just trumpets, no airbox.

it's science, but it's pretty finickey science...

I ditched it. Will keep the box for a e46/s54 project. like Panici said. I don't really think the change of intake sound was worth reworking a car that has otherwise been bullet proof.

You don't need to rework the car, you just need the correct airbox.

How does your current airbox fit? Did you move the booster?

Street car - The choice is emotional.
Race car, Do you need 10HP?

              No booster dual masters

              current air box fits fine

uhhh, this isn't a question- always more, always!
