I'm looking at a 24V swap using the E53 X5 oil pan and front diff. That setup moves the diff some amount (3-4" at a guess) to the left relative to the E30 oil pan. I'll need to build a u-jointed driveshaft, which means I'll need a fixed output flange at the T-case.
my mistake, for whatever reason i completely misinterpreted your question. guess ill go put on my flame suit.
I don't see what would stop this from being used in a u-jointed setup, but isn't that a lot of work compared to grafting the AWD specific bits of the ix pan onto a 24v pan?

the E30 ix oil pan bits leave you with a weak front diff and your engine will be rotated 10* too far upright.
If I didn't buy this and just made it a habit to check my spline grease once/yr - do you think I could go without this? (new IX owner here...)
Sure, it will last well. just dont try to do any burnout or donuts with the car, clutch bomb etc.. just drive it smoothly.. shaft head is "fuse" against cracking front diff..
I understood that the front diff was much weaker than the driveshaft... The turbo guy was (is?) blowing up front diffs right and left, but hasn't torn up a driveshaft yet.
That being said, with stock power, you should be able to drop the clutch a lot without blowing anything up.
I'm new here to the forum and a new IX owner as well. I have a 1989 ix w/ 100k miles and the front driveshaft is worn. I'm interested in the extender here, which is now on eBay, but I'm wondering (as a novice mechanic) whether I will have to replace the transfer case as well given that the driveshaft is worn, or whether this longer driveshaft will catch enough of the transfer case teeth to avoid having to buy a new one (at least for now). Any advice or thoughts we be appreciated. Thanks.
