R3V's Newest iX Game Thread - What's Under Your Flare?!

I was pulling the flares off of one of my parts iXs and the front jack point (torque box as I call it from my Mustang days) completely fell off. The passenger rear flare pulled off half the quarter with it :o

Makes me think twice every time someone lists an iX as a "rust free" car......

My rallycross car is considerably worse. I can see past the rear subframe bushing location into the lower rear quarter panel.

I just found this when rebuilding the rear suspension. I wanted to just redo the trailing arms buuuuttttt I guess I am in for some shit.

That rust SUCKS. I welded in new perches once before. Now it's on my "don't buy a car if it has rust in these places" list.

Oh damn, I vividly remember repairing both spring perches on my touring.
Although not a whole lot of rust on the arches themselves.

little before shot, turned out the metal tube where the vent tubes run through was completely rusted through.

I completely refabricated the spring perches and section of the rail itself.

I decided to glue in the metal vent tube as it's not structural at all + welding steel to stainless makes it rust

Aaaand done, let's hope I never have to touch this area again :)

Wow, nice work. Those “tubes” are rusted on every car north of Delaware here on the east coast of the US. That was the least of your problems!

              underneath

This may have been caused by a poor previous repair but still...

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

well, you could have seen that car was extremely rust even before pulling the flares off.

FWIW I've had mine off before and it was clean underneath.

                Nice repair work!

My other Lach car (Heidi) is nice and clean underneath as well! This thing is a total mess of Swiss cheese though. I have a few very unique rot spots on the Alpine '89 here, too. Crazy what happens when these cars sit. There's a half dollar size hole in the alpine car from the engine bay to the wheel well.

                    Yeah, glad mine is inside.

When I parked outside for a few years, I started developing a bubble under the windshield by the middle wiper. Now it sits where it's dry so at least it doesn't get worse. I think they probably nicked the paint when I had the windshield replaced. :(

I don’t have the balls to look under the rear arches on mine...maybe someday I’ll take a peak. Nothing my spring perches are mint though and I’m in MI. So who knows?

Wow these pictures are seriously scary! Makes me rethink how much $$$ I want to spend on my lifelong Upstate NY car if that kind of rust is under my flares/skirts.

Scary pictures. My 89 is a CA car all it's life. I pulled all the skirts and fender flares today and only found some dirt and original clean paint, 0 rust. I feel bad for what you have to deal with.

There's nothing behind the flares, lol.
