US spec E30 M3 colors were red (henna, zinnober, brilliant), silver (lachs, sterling), black (diamond), and white (alpine 1,2).

OP: IMO, if you are concerned with resale, keep it stock, otherwise do what you want with it.

The stock M3 form in white looks really good with the smattering of black trim items the factory installed. The trend in the 80's was to go all monochrome with one color for everything. People would white out all the black trim. That looks extremely dated now. Classic good looks stay classic.

Factory colors for North America were Black, White, Silver, and Red. I know there were two silvers and also two reds -Zino, and then there was Henna which was available in the production run up to 8/1987.

The Sport Evo cars had additional special colors available.

Never mind some one already put it up.

Personally, I would only change the color if you do everything: door sills, engine bay, etc., and I would choose an oem color.
Now regarding color, depends what you like. Black, Silver, Red, etc.
I love the color black and would choose diamondschwartz (sig)or Jet Black.
Silver, always liked how delphin metallic looks.
I'm not much of a red guy, but I love Calypso (DD :D).
So it depends what you like and in the end, you do what you want.
