Blacked Out Kidneys: Why?

ALLOT of people first thing they do is spray paint the bottle caps black.
Sorta like "I did something. Modded.... Yeah..." :P

My kidney's were painted black by PO a while ago and the paint looked like shit and was starting to chip.

so I just used some paint stripper to take my kidneys back to chrome and I'm very happy with the result.

I have an AWII '89. The prior paint scheme was white/black (ie, black side mirrors, black kidney, shadowline trim, black air intakes on the valance) but I think I'm gonna go back to white/chrome for the most part. Classier imo.

I love a nicely done shadowline grill on a black/black E30 for sure but on most other colours the chrome kidneys look better. jmo.

To people who say chrome is blingy and ostentatious, your solution is rattlecanning over it? Now that's class BMW couldn't touch from the factory.

Its an insanely tiny amount of chrome, that actually allows the kidneys to pop off the grill, and not look like a junkyard heap with the kidneys missing. It's not like putting 20" floaters on your shit.

spray painting the kidneys is a bad idea. the paint won't stick. it WILL chip off.

you can buy a really nice molded black kidney for about $40 on ebay. Made in hong kong or something - the quality is actually excellent. and it won't ever chip.

I still can't believe how much some of you guys flail around over somebody running a black kidney on their car. we wouldn't be having this discussion 10 years ago..

Personal preference and color motif will dictate. I can't make up my mind so I have both and just switch bavk and forth. One is a more classic bmw look and the other is more modern and aggressive. Here's two cars that eveyone can agree look great.

I personally like the black kidneys. Not a fan of the chrome they look weird to me.

this car is just about perfect. imo it would look better with the chrome grill but hey, everyone's preference is different.

To the people who rock black kidneys, at least take the time to paint the whole front grill black. People paint just the kidneys and it looks more like shot because it doesn't match the grills.

I painted my euro grills flat black while my kidneys are gloss black to give it that subtle look since i don't really like the attention the chrome brings to my e30 because i have really shitty paint right now. lol
But I'll probably go chrome again when my car's repainted.
If you can't distinguish a BMW just because of the grills.. then maybe you have bad eye sight or just don't know your BMWs. lol

I just think the smoked hellas + black kidneys contrast better with the colour of my car (Lachsilber).





Both look good but blacked out looks more aggresive.

The fresh new smoked lights and better picture make the first picture look a lot better than the second. It's not so much the blacked out grill itself although it does match the smoked lights and flows better. I recently switched from smoked lights to standard euro ellipsoids to match my chrome Evo 3 grill and fogs. I'm not a fan of smoked grill with standard lights either.

The only way, in my opinion, blacked-out kidneys look good is if you have smoked ellips/euros and your car is NOT schwarz.
