Noob questions! Wanting to turbo my M20. School me on the turbooos r3v!

    Hey guys,

Ok so I want to turbo my E30. I didn't see an FI section on the forums so I figured I would post here.

The car is a 1991 325i with 136K miles. Timing belt and water pump just replaced. All kinds of other maintenance done here at the dealership. The engine is in tip top shape.

I want to turbo it stock. I would do a head gasket (I'm not even sure if that's needed on these engines) But that's about it.

    So just a couple questions.

    1. How much is this going to run me? $1K? $2k? $4k? I don't mind buying a used kit. Nothing fancy, I just want around 250whp. and a COMPLETE bolt on kit. Is the M20 even capable of that power on stock block?

    2. My car is an automatic, so I would be converting it into manual. Will an E36 M3 Transmission bolt up to the M20? I'm not a big fan of the E30 manual transmission.

That's pretty much it. I appreciate any help!

    :ohsnap:

Wasn't it you that said you wouldn't convert to manual because your E30 would be a dd?

Yes. But now I think I'm buying a different daily. E46 most likely.

Serious. I just need some help. I don't know much about these older engines and have no idea where to start.

Bottom end will be okay for those goals.
A "kit" doesn't really exist. eBay ones are just generic crap put together for you that is usually.. well, crap. You have to most likely peice your own.

old engine, new engine. doesnt matter.

the concept and parts are the same: s54, m10, renesis 13b, vq35, etc...

Ok thanks for the answer :D

I'll join up over at e30tech. I won't be going with an ebay kit. Seems like there's a lot of mixed feeling on them!

Maybe I just have had bad experiences with my recent E30s. I tried everything to get rid of shifter slop and couldn't for the life of me. The 5 speeds in both of them felt horrible.
