it's been strongly recommended i run the synth with zddp, and use normal everyday driving for 600 - 1000 km as the break-in. use oil of choice after. it's the same process a dealer uses with a new car. the procedure with real break-in oil is much different and the oil is only used for the initial start up, rev to mid range, heat cycle twice, then discarded.

i don't know who advised you but i would not follow their advice on the diesel, synthetic aspects or following the dealer process.
Your engine wasn't honed by the OEM, it was honed by some aftermarket shop so its not the same method and technique, the materials and finishes are likely very different as well. The OEM developed and validated their breaking process by testing hundreds of engines so that their approach works. Its not practical for the OEM to do anything else so they make it work for them. It's an apples vs oranges comparison.
A dedicated breakin oil aren't really discarded that quickly you want to drive with it, not 1000km but 100-200km is fine (follow the manufacturers advice). the breakin occurs when the engine is loaded so the first few periods of high and variable load once upto temp should be using the breakin oil.

i would use a mineral oil with ZDDP additive (if it was low in ZDDP) over a full synthetic as a last resort

i'm probably using a proper break in oil after the advice here and some local discussion with a couple respected builders. likely means the car sits untouched for the next 6 or 7 months as i'm losing the weather now. the break in oil won't get here til after i have snowfall.

woo hoo ! one of the ( only 3 ) performance shops hooked me up with some lucas straight 30 break in oil. their builder also discussed the procedure, what to use for daily oil, and gave me a couple recommends for solving my mid exhaust. also told me about the ( only! ) other place in town to get the break in oil.
