I don't think you said what you meant to say, and I don't want to put words in your mouth.

Every 2-3 oil changes so about 8-12k miles it doesn't cost anything to do a valve adjustment so I don't see why you wouldn't do it fairly often

Just edited it. Thanks for catching my mistake :)

OK, now I can argue with you ;)

the space doesn't have to be the same if one side is longer than the other - they'll be proportional, but not equal.

So you could still have the play, but if you did the adjustment with the feeler gauge in the "wrong" place, you'd be setting the wrong clearance.

          did that make sense?

Before I could write out my disagreement with this, I decided it was probably correct.

Adjust to .010 then put a .005 on the cam side and measure the gap on the valve side..then let us know :D

Well I'm not saying its 2:1, but I don't think it's 1:1. I thought I read somewhere once that cam side adjustments were somewhere around .009" but I can't seem to find it for reference.

                  X1 > X2

                  like so:

if one side is longer, moving short side x amount moves long side y amount.

Well if somebody figures out the ratio, that would be sick.

I find it much easier to get an accurate adjustment when using the feeler against the cam. Plus it doesnt bend the shit out of your feeler gauge!

Angled feeler gauge is cheap, 5toes.

Funny story, I once did a valve adjustment with a can of herring:

                          Very simple to do:
                          1: Misplace your feeler gauges
                          2: get angry
                          3: find micrometer
4: measure stuff until you find a .010" object
5: cut the herring can tab into a rectangle
                          6: adjust valves
                          for those interested:

No shit, but seriously angled feeler gauge is less than $5 at HF. But, I guess you can eat Herring Fillets and adjust the valves afterward. It's a toss-up.

Angled feeler gauges help, but still ti is hard to get it in the right spot and get the "pull" consistent.. for me anyways
