I ran 15W50 mobil 1 for years. I like their turbo diesel truck oil - I think it might be a 5W40 or something. Works it a little less hard when the engine is cold, but still has like 1100ppm of ZDDP. I'd still run the 15W50 on hot summer track days though. It was fun being N/A, all those super fast turbo cars would die off like flies but the N/A cars could go all day if their oil could handle it..

I haven't changed the oil in the E90 yet because the computer still says I have another 6k left. :???:

        15w-50 Mobil 1, comes in a 5 L jug at walmart.
Oddly enough, other than Mobil 1, I couldn't find any other 15w-50 at all at my local stores. Plenty of 15w-40 variety though, but the 15w-50 has a wider range of temps so I'd rather get that as it gets above 80F around here in the summer.

This needs to stop being referenced. That book is 30 years old, back from the age where synthetics were brand new technology. It does not accurately apply anymore. It's good for a general idea.

10W-50 ULX110 which is a local brand ive swapped to based on feedback from some good sources

            previously i used 10W-50 penrite

i like a 10W as it flows a little better when cold than 15W or 20W which i have used before

50 seems to give me the right idle oil pressure when the oil is 200F or so, at higher rpm the oil pressure is good to

Whats changed about the weights? The technology has changed but if we put 15w50 from back then and ran them side by side would there be a difference? In the long run there would be obviously, but for 5 minutes? You are probably right, I barely know anything about oil but it seems like the temperature tolerances wouldn't change with time?

20W50 dino oil all year, in Ohio. No problems starting in the cold. Generally don't use the car when temps drop below 10°.

The weights haven't changed so much, but back then there was a lot of ZDDP in oils. Newer catalyst technologies require low ZDDP oils, so it was eventually phased out almost entirely.

I've been using Castrol Edge 5w50 for the last two years. No complaints or issues. I run it all year long up here in Ontario.
