Isn't 5 years/50k miles the timing belt change interval? That's actually kind of scary that the belt could still snap within, or just outside of the 5 year interval. I would think BMW would engineer in a bit more wiggle room than that. Could it just be a bad belt?

There are many factors for the belt degradation. All the "broken" belts I've dealt with had problems with the cogs ripping off, not the belt actually snapping.

Anyone have experience with the Gates racing belt? Curious about them...

The difference with the BMW belt system is a non adjustable tensioner. So as the belt stretches there is no compensation. Plus the water pump is buried below the timing belt and I would do the job just to change that, since if that fails you are dead in the water(unintentionally pun).

2000 KM really isn't that far. If he says it's been done, I wouldn't worry. Does he have any paperwork showing it's been done?

I just changed mine after having the motor for 5 years unknown how long before that it was changed. Plus it gets pretty hot and pretty cold here and i haven't drove more than 1200 miles in that time.

My old belt looked just like my new one.

I got a parts car in 2011 with a chowed belt and trashed head. The idler had failed,
and the belt wandered off and shredded. A lot.
It had exactly 160k on it. The belt had been changed in 1998, at 58k.

So THAT belt lasted 102k and 13 years.

              Your mileage will vary.

Me, I'd drive it if it was a year over and I had some reason to be lazy, as in, "it's only got 20k on it".

But I don't mind changing cylinder heads, either.

Listen to it. If its making any funny rubbing noises, don't drive it home. But if it sounds ok, I say drive it home. It'll be fine. You'll be cruising at 2500rpm most of the way. Then just change it yourself when you're home.
