Middle of Kansas, where the weather is in the 90's/100's regularly in the summer and in the teens to 30's in the winter but also goes to the 60's sometimes. This state kinda sucks.

I have been running 20w-50 in my car for two years and nothing fancy of a oil just 76 super synthetic blend. I add zinc additive also. Have not found anything on my drain plug magnet yet. Well nothing bad.

Still looking for a good winter oil with plenty of zddp probably 10w 30 or 5W 30. Here is a common block temp at noon up here:

Do not use 5w30 in this engine unless you want to wear down the internal parts quickly. For winter driving, go with at least 0w40. I have run 15w40 down to 10F in Madison, WI without any problem. I just parked the car when the temp drops below that.

What brand of 20W50 are you guys using? The previous owner has been using 5w30 full synt. Can I switch to a synthetic blend without issues?
I've been using Castrol GTX high mileage on my '89 VW Cabriolet for many years with good pressures.

Damn...switch over asap. Do a valve adjustment as soon as you can. Not sure if there is any other damage from running 5w30 for a long time. I tried 5w30 in the dead of winter once to see if it would help. Yes, starting the car with 5w30 at 0 F was much easier, but it takes only 10 - 15 min to get the engine to normal operating temp. At normal operating temp 5w30 is way too thin. I switched back to 15w40 after only one day and did not like the look of the 5w30 oil coming off the engine (metal flakes?).

based on what data ? i wouldnt have hesitation in using 10W-30 in winter here and we get mild winter where min is 35F. the oil temp doesnt really exceed 180F so the voscosity is probably the same as a 10W-50 in summer at 200F. im talking just normal street driving. not talking about getting temps upto 110C+ on the track
