    M42 No Start

Been trying to get my 91 318 running again after rebuilding the head. Original head had a crack, leaked antifreeze into number 2 cylinder. Used head off a M42 from a E36. The cams were worn and mine were excellent shape. Lapped the valves after I disassembled the head. Reassembled with my E30 Cams. Used the cam timing blocks to make sure the cams are timed to the crank. Double checked the index marks and cam timing, pin is in the flywheel index hole. Everything lines up. Replaced the timing chain and gears as they were worn to a point. Initially used the E36 gears, Resulted in a no start because i did not have the trigger for the CPS. Installed a new E30 timing gear on the exhaust cam as that is the one the sensor looks for. The intake has no sensor, so either cam gear will work. Then I found the fuel pump was inop. Replaced it have fuel at the injectors, visually confirmed with injector rail uninstalled. Reinstalled everything, still no start. Now the crazy part. If we swap the coil pack plug wires, it will start with throttle wide open, Runs terrible but it semi-starts. to me, it should not run and possibly be backfiring. I checked the coil input wires back to the ECU. Verified number 1 coil is connected to the ECU correctly. All 4 pin out correctly.

Are you 100% sure the cam gear is on the right way? Running badly at full throttle sounds like it's getting spark in the wrong order. Seen that before.

Yes, The cam gears are indexed with the center of the cams, Cams are aligned with indexing tool. Cams have the double dots facing up. Number one cam lobes are pointing to each other. I agree, It seems to be out of time but don't see how.

Can you verify spark timing with a timing light?

That is a good idea, No timing light at the moment. Pretty sure we have a ignition timing issue. Not sure why though.

check your vibration damper....ask me how I know...took me over 2 months to diagnose and turns out the VD was cracked and in two separate pieces. BavAuto has em new OEM for $100, you won't find em anywhere else for even $200

Wow, what a deal! Must have been an F up on their end.

If I saw it at $100 I would have picked up 3.
