Definitely watching this thread closely; wish my dad wanted to do this for me :( This is something that I plan on doing in the very near future so hurry up! Why are you going with the 5speed over the 6? I've heard people ragging on the gas mileage a 5'er will get?

Anywho, I'm a little confused on your findings on the Nikasil, I thought that the Alusil was the desirable motor? As the Nikasil were recalled no? Do I have this backwards?

Looking good though! :thumbsup (wtf, how do you thumbs up?)

It's significant lighter, smaller, cheaper, and bolts right in with the stock trans mounts and a stock driveshaft. I have a 3.25 with my 5 speed, and on the highway at 65mph I get high 20's MPG if I'm just cruising.

Ok correct me if i read this wrong. So you run a M60 5spd flywheel with a 328/M3 clutch disc / pressure plate.

Or are you Running both 328/M3 Flywheel and Clutch setup???

MY father taught me how to wrench but never got into building...
It's for this reason that "I will be here" for both of my boys no matter what there hobbies my be...
I finished the cross-member today. I boxed in the mount location, reenforced the sway bar mounts, Added strengthening supporting material to cut down on any flexing that may happen.
I will post painted pictures tomorrow..

          flywheel/clutch

you cant run a 328/m3 clutch kit unless you have a aftermarket flywheel like jb .. etc on the oem 5 spd flywheel there is a little grove towards the middle that won't make the clutch kit compatible. but the pressure plate bolts onto the flywheel no problems. so if you have a clutch hook up person you'd have to get a v8 clutch disc so the grooves won't be a problem with 328 pressure plate upgraded to stage 2 or 3 etc.. that would be the cheapest route but you cant get anyone to resurface the flywheel here in our area so you'd just have to scruff it up a little if you want to reuse it

i ended up using a 540i 5 speed flywheel with a v8 m60 clutch disc and 328i pressure plate stage 2(which is just stronger rivets lol....)

i tried the m5 disc it didn't work, the spines on the disc were too small but then i was using a the 5 speed tranny from a 530i so that disc probaly would work in a 6 speed setup but then if your 6 speed theres quite a few clutch kits for them

540 6-speed and M5 use same clutch and trans .E46M3 6 speed uses same clutch disc as 540 6-speed and M5

yea thats what i said lol 5speed compared to 6 speed... i think the op is using 5 speed... which has a bigger input spine compared to the 540 im not saying your wrong im just saying that the clutch disc and pilot bearing will be different in to two since jeremy is asking questions about 5 speed rather than 6 speed

Had an exciting day today. Guess it's cause it's setting in now that this is going to really happen.
Got the 5spd today in the mail.. it came with an AKG shifter.. soo stoked.

Still need a flywheel. but got rubber mounts and a starter coming now..

                                Isn't the 6-speed input shaft _bigger_ than on 5-speeders .. ?
