Any one have any thoughts on this vs hoisting the engine and whatever else? I don't have an effective way to really hoist the engine and at first thought removing the subframe would be the way to go, any experience on this?
Remove subframe the subframe for oil pan gasket?

You realize the engine is bolted to the subframe, correct?

you can also loosen the motor mounts
jack up the engine by the ac bracket
remove the oil pan bolts
remove the 2 bolts for the oil pump pick up and the pan will slide out.Comment

I agree with iwantspeed, just lift the engine up a tad and go to town on the oil pan bolts. It's not tooo hard, just getting around the oil pump is a hassle with the gasket on. Make sure to use some gasket adhesive so the gasket does not move around when you are trying to put it back on. Otherwise, its a fairly simple job.

Just did two of these. The pan comes out by just loosening the the right motor mount and lifting the engine an inch or two. I didn't see a way to get it out without removing the oil pump while it's still in the (unbolted) pan. It's a pain but can be done.
As said earlier, allow the new gasket fully set up, cuz you will be banging on it to get the pan back in.sigpicComment

^this...but I took off the bell-housing cover undid as many bolts as I could on the pan. took off the motor mount bolts and jacked up the motor from the bell-housing took off the bolts for the oil pump pickup and it slid out.
with the jack over by the bell-housing it makes it easier to move around and get the pan out. imoComment

what? the oil pump is in the way, you can't just slide it out.
i had to unbolt motor mounts, raise the engine, unbolted the pan and unbolted the oil pump as well to both slide it out.
