I guess tomorrow I'll try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes and see if that does anything (might as well), if not, I'll take out the cluster and see what's up.
The first car I ever rode in was an e30

Take the cluster out...only a fifteen minutes job.

Okay more stuff. Now the car overheats if you go too slow. The clutch fan seems to be okay, but the fan in front of the radiator didn't seem to be spinning. Is it supposed to always spin?

If you go pretty fast (since the speedo doesn't work, i'm just guessing) around 80 or above, its perfectly fine, below half. It'll shoot up to red in a minute of going slow. It seems to have gotten worse and may or may not be connected to the other issues.

        Any help anyone?

How old is your radiator? The heat exchange between your radiator and the air is not sufficient...possible clogged radiator if your fan clutch is working ok. Your water pump might be going too.

Fast forward two hours. I'm driving the car and notice that the speedo is at zero. Subsequently, the odometer doesn't turn, and the MPG meter under the tach is at 0 when pressing the gas, and goes to 40 when you let off. What the hell happened? I'm as sure as I can be that I used the right ports, and I've never heard of anyone having this issue before. Any help?
A friend of mine with his m10 model had a similar issue (no mpg, tack) but his speedo "worked" just 30mph off. replace the si and all worked fine again

Thanks...i've been busy with other stuff, but how hard is an SI board replacement? It's not the whole cluster, right (i'd like to keep the orig miles)?

Very easy...after you pulled the cluster, there is a single screw to remove and you can pull the whole SI board out. Here is the link...

That's strange! I just clicked on the link and it took me to the page without any problem. I do not have an account with them either. If you continue to have problem then go to Google and search "E30 SI Board replacement". The first item should be the one...or try www.beckerelectronics.com

it depends on which version of the SI board you have, some are nicad, others are lithium.

The later boards (post 1990 I believe) use lithium batteries. They are much shorter than the regular AA that you see in stores. All replacement boards use lithium batteries. These boards disable the charging circuit so no worry about batteries blowing up on you.
