Well, a solder sucker (pump) and desoldering wick are indispensable additions to a soldering iron when you need to replace components on a PCB, especially, on a 40-year-old one without micro components.

That's fair, but in this instance, a used DME is the way to go.

Also, most folks aren't likely to be interested in repairing a board, even one as simple as a Motronic 1.x unit. Ultimately it would likely make more sense to go to aftermarket management when the electronics get to that point on a large scale.

It's very simple to unsolder a 28-pin DIP chip.
You put a PCB vertically, heat up each pin randomly from the chip side, and suck out the solder from the bottom side using a pump.

0261200027 goes for $100 on eBay.

He'll need tools to replace the batteries in the instrument panel anyway.

Since my 1984 BMW 325e was an early production car, is that why it has a 0 261 200 021 ECU in it? I read that the performance chip is not soldered in the 0 261 200 027. Is that the only difference between the two? Thank you.

I put the Turner Performance chip in. Didn't do a dam thing in improving my cars performance. What a waste of time and money. I got my money back but lost in shipping costs.

^^^it's like 5hp lol. I tested them on a dyno. Even with me messing with the maps live, best I saw was 8, and that was on a b25.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to just leave the car the way it is. The performance chip and a (cone shaped) air filter didn't make the car perform any better. I don't want to waste anymore money.

Cone filter showed me a 5whp loss over a stock air box on the dyno. It's a gimmick. :(

This is strange because chips make a huge difference on Eta cars. We're talking 24-27HP at the flywheel and better overall driveability even with the auto trans. Are you sure it's a genuine chip and you are running premium octane fuel? Perhaps something is going on with your car. Post a pic of your engine so we can be sure of what you have.

best thing you can do for an ETA is install a chip. i would never suggest this for any other car, but since it's impossible to hurt an ETA, buy the $30 eBay chip and go have fun. it's the first thing i've done to basically every ETA i've owned in the past and it really wakes them up.

contrary to popular opinion, i really like the 325e and 528e...
