One Year In... M3 Build Thread

Small update. I'm pulling wiring from around the driver footwell. Hoping to pass as little wire as possible back through the firewall and leave some in place in the car, we'll see how that works out.

    So far....

This is the main connector for all the wires that run to the steering wheel and the stalks (turn signal, wipers, cruise, etc)

Pretty self explanatory on how to get it off the column.

[will post pic here when I disconnect the wires themselves, not there yet]

This T shaped black mount sits on the firewall holds up cables and holds down insulation, easy to remove.

This guy mounts to the firewall and holds the OBC module as well as several connectors that go through into the engine bay. Easy to disconnect just remember where everything was plugged in or take pictures. Take pictures. For your sanity. There are two main connectors

On the lower left side of the footwell, behind where the engine release used to be, there appears to be a zip tie holding the main harness in place. Do not cut this. I almost did until I saw you can leave it whole and remove the harness from it easily

Detach some of the cable mounts from the ledge above the steering column. Remembering where each goes

This apparently is the seatbelt buzzer relay.

As part of this I'm removing the pedal box as well.

Unhook the brake and gas pedal return springs. I just let them hang from the pedal box for now

Remove the pin and clip holding the brake master cylinder to the brake pedal. The crop part of the clip needs to be lifted high enough so that the whole clip can slide over the pin

Now the clutch master cylinder. No clip here, just a 17cm and 13cm wrench needed

Both cylinders should be free of the pedals now.

    More to come!

Ha! It helps when you have the entire interior out. Opens things up a bit. I have smacked the back of my head on the exposed end of my steering column 2 or 3 times-that's always fun

Birthday present from my sister came in Friday. My other sister got me a new heater core pipe - let's say I'm difficult to shop for.

        New OEM insulation!

        and from my wife....

            Way overdue for an update!

I moved the various wiring harnesses aside so I could get to the 6 bolts holding in the pedal box. This job is much easier with no dash/windshield.

            Top bolts out

bottom bolts out. This loosens the brake booster as well.

Disconnect the two bolts holding the pedal box to the clutch master cylinder.

Then it wiggles free. Finally got that last piece of old insulation out!

A also disconnected the ignition cylinder wiring while i was there

MUCH more to come soon. I just loaded up over 400 pics.

Center Caps look much better, but really show how badly the wheels need to be refreshed

                Here come the big guns

                  Engine Removal Prep

                  Removing hood stops

White plastic clips around shock tower go to the ignition coil.

Bracket on passenger shock tower - holds an AC line

Clip for coolant tank overflow hose

                  Rail bumper

Cruise control actuator coming off - three bolts

Ground Wires - Working my way to getting the wiring harness freed

                  Loosening connections to ABS unit

And off comes the Intake Plenum

Magnet helps with the washers - dont want them falling down into the engine bay

Bracket on back of plenum holding line from valve cover gasket to brake booster

Disconnecting 2 hoses from bottom of plenum. One on front, one directly below.

Remove bolt under support bracket (probably replacing this old busted bushing with an upgraded unit. Kormann makes some good stuff like this)

                  Off!

                  Some oil blow-by

And there are those beautiful ITBs!

Very nice. Have you separated the engine bay harness from the chassis side and pull it from the car yet?

Driver side brake sensor coming off

Oil filter housing temp and pressure sensors

                      Distributor cap off

                      Rotator cap on for now

Diiirrrrty coolant. Draining coolant out of this thing is like helping a drunk friend puke. You think its done, you move something slightly, and all over again.

                      T-Stat coming off

                      Main upper radiator hose

                      Main lower radiator hose

Vacuum hose from fuel pressure regulator to hose to idle control valve

broke away when i tried to disconnect

This is the bottom of the line (below the ITBs) that the vacuum line above connects to. There is a separate opening that connects to another vacuum line that runs to the fuel strainer/separator near the ECU.

[spoiler here, but you know where this is going]

The little gold guy above isnt in the Real OEM diagram. I need to dig into the fuel side of this a bit more.

                      More to come

Thanks. Yeh the harness is all out of the way, but I still have yet to go through the wiring to get all of it out of the engine bay. Thinking I may have to pull some out of the cabin but hoping not to have to pull the whole thing through.

Wow! Enough pics to use as a reference whenever any of us crack into ours for minor stuff.
