Did I say shave it to 8 lbs? I said shave 8lbs!! Meaning shave 8lbs from each.

heres a thread with a little info.

Post number 5 guy said he has a M42 flywheel shave to 17lbs.

hurray! so he has a flywheel that's about as light as a stock M20 flywheel. ;)

fwiw, when purchasing parts from UUC, one of the reps there described how he had 8lbs removed from his dual mass m42 flywheel- and while he enjoyed the difference, he wished that he had the maximum amount removed.. which I believe was somewhere around 15lbs.

I've done maybe 5 or 600 BMW clutches probably someplace in the neighborhood of 20 m42 twin to single mass conversions.

But Guy #5 in a forum has cut 8 lbs off of an m42 flywheel so it must be cool to do.

            EDIT: UUC, pfft.

Torque thing with backpressure-for whatever reason, I lost a fairly significant about of low-end driveability that I attributed to torque loss when I switched exhausts.

As for the M42 and M20 arguement. The weight is not dependent on the weight alone; weight distribution is actually more important with the RPM it's spinning at. A lightened M20 flywheel has a significantly better distribuition of mass than the stock setup, which is where a good deal of the gain comes from, meaning that the mass is overall closer to the center of the assembly. This, at least, has been my understanding of the conversion.

                    ...
It's not the "loss of back pressure" but the loss of velocity when the gasses expand too fast, it reduces "scavenging" of the cylinders.

LOL their is a thread that explains how the swap is almost pointless because the weight of the clutch assembly do become almost equal and all of you left out that you have to change the starter gear when changing to an m20 flywheel.

I will find the thread! for all of you bored pplz

Well wheres your proof? Its all right there in that thread. IF you fuckin remove 8lbs from an M42 flywheel and you remove 8 lbs from an M20 flywheel your in the same fuckin spot.

They weight the same exact fuckin thing when all bolted together.
So how dont I know? The info is right in front of you. Unless you can prove me wrong, then you shut it.

However the weight is significantly reduced (even with a stock weight m20 flywheel), the thread you are looking for is either: A: crap or B: crap.

NOTE: The single mass m42 flywheel that kid is talking about is not all that readily available and the clutch that fits it is one weak sister.

Hands on, been building race cars and working on BMWs for over 28 years, I'm telling you you are wrong.

Go forth and be as wrong as you want though. It's your God given right.

Well untill you show me different then Im sticking to it, I havent seen one other person here show me any proof that you can not lighten a M42 dual mass flywheel.

There is such thing as an m42 single mass flywheel (available on Euro M42's) apparently they arent too hard to comebye,

find that single mass, shave it down, use your same starter gear.... WIN!
