Spend $14K to get a 3 - 4 year old Legacy Outback XT wagon:

Spend another $4K on mods - downpipe, software, intercooler, BBK, etc. - to make it a total sleeper. If I could find one in refrigerator white, all the better. Spend $.95 for the Baby on Board sign in the rear window.

Spend the remaining $8,999.05 on the nicest E30 325iS I could find, put it in the garage, and enjoy on sunny days.

B-b-b-b-b-but old man, your max IRA contribution for TY09 is 6K even with a 1K catch-up?

      :p:p:p

ah yes, but if you spread it around between a 401k, roth IRA, and regular IRA, you can contribute ~16k. and you can always open up a regular brokerage account.

I just can't see spending double digits on a car, ever. But I guess somebody has to so I can buy it later when it still has 90% of it's life left but is only worth 10% of what it cost new. ;)

I can. Eventually, I'll grow sick of working on cars, and a lot of cars are built such that it has 90% of its life left, but the remainder of its lifetime will be spent on life support. $16,500 stripped out Honda Civic. 10% value = $1,650. $1,650 Honda Civic = Deathtrap heap.

Eventually, in the distant future, all I want to do is change the oil, and change the pads/rotors on the familymobile, and go back inside the house and receive faint praise from my future wife who will absently say, oh, you changed the oil, great. Can you unclog the shower upstairs. It's draining slow again. My future kids will be like, oh sweet, you changed the oil. Can I borrow the car so I can hang out with Bobby, the kid with all those piercings. Then I will recede into my early 40s, a mere shell of a man, domesticated, sterile.

Last few posts have been made up awesome.

                  $27,000.00

Hm. If I didn't already have the M Coupe as Alvin said I'd say that. They are a lot like nothing else... except P cars. A really fun P car is more than $27k though, so it's really a bargain for an M Coupe (15k-25k). (I'm happy with my S52 to be honest)

Since we're talking daily here, I'm gonna say I'd be happy with a not balls to the wall E30 or E36. So even with maintenance over years I'd be spending less than 10k.

                  Invest/save the remaining 17k.

Doesn't take much to keep me happy.

mini cooper S nicely modded. those are great DD's.

keep the extra cash for the e30.

That's exactly what leasing is for.

I used to think like you. As a matter of fact I used to think worse - I believe that a car was only a machine to get you from point A to point B and who cares what it looks like or what it does... that changed hella quick when I actually LEARNED about cars. This doesn't happen in diapers for girls like it does for guys. We need a little coaching. Anyways, when I first drove my now-husband's Audi S4 and BMW 330ci ZHP, I started to realize a car was more than just a travel tool. It's a luxury. And luxury costs money. The problem is that now I've been pampered and I have a hard time settling for less, which is why I'm trying to stay under $27k for the next one.

The problem is that the wheels I want for the Mini S are $3,000.
I priced one out online last night and it ended up being a $32k car. lol
One of my friends has a Mini S. It's sick. But it's lacking upgrades and nice wheels. Must have wheeeeeeels.

no, that is what cash is for. :p leasing is just another way to always have a car payment.

gas costs me about $100 a month, insurance less than $30. aside from minor maintenance (a few hundred a year) and mods (that I don't really have to do) my car costs me nothing to drive. if it sits there and doesn't move, I don't still have a monthly payment to make.

it's just the way I was raised I guess. My have parents never owned a car that they didn't pay cash for. They weren't even especially good cars, and I don't remember ever being stranded somewhere because of reliability problems. i'd rather retire without worrying about what I'm going to do for money, than drive in something flashy to appear wealthy. $20k a year happens to be my goal for annual savings within the next 5-10 years, a car payment just doesn't figure into that. :)

besides that, if I really wanted an "nicer" car, E36 M3s are like two sticks of gum and some pocket lint these days!

I also see subarus as not having as much potential for mods and looking badass, infact, I'm tired of seeing them as they are everywhere in my town. both the tree hugger ones and the ricer fag ones. I've seen pics of a few slammed foresters and things like that which I honestly thought were done right, so there are exceptions to my anti-subaru outlook on life.
you are so very wrong sir. quattro is no where near touching subarus awd system.
