Try Polaris Labs if you are interested in having oil analysis done. I am biased here but this is where I work and I deal with oil samples all day long. Polaris is ISO17025-A2LA accredited, which means they are rigorously audited to ensure that they actually do what they say they do. Pretty sure blackstone is not, although they might be cheaper.
The key to reliable analysis is to sample correctly-engine oil at full temp. sample taken using new tubing/jars and taken at the time of an oil change. Also make sure to provide as much info as possible with the sample like type and weight of the oil, car type, any additives or additional oil that has been added etc. The basic test packages will tell you a lot, but there is no limit to what you can learn about your engines condition with additional tests...at a cost of course.
If you go with Polaris send me a PM and I can be sure to personally run your oil sample.

I must be running too thin. I'm using the BMW (castrol) 5w30 synthetic I get from work since its free. I do seem to consume a lot of oil tho... About 1qt every 1500 miles Maybe its time to switch to something heavier.
It seems silly of me to ask (since I'm a profession BMW technician) but what exactly are the benefits etc of heavier vs lighter oils? I understand maintaining viscosity at various temperature ranges, but don't you also want the lightest temperature permissible oil in order to reduce drag on the moving parts of the engine?'88 325ic - Vert in winter baby!

this thread=perfect for my question.
I'm using 5w20, way too light?
I told my dad about the majority of r3v using heavier weighted oil, and he says that it's just more for the engine to work through. I suggested 20w50.
my oil pressure light flickers in the lower RPM's, and shines very dull at cruising speeds. no knockingsigpicOriginally posted by e30hijinksI move faster than "the speed of light." I'm always connected to my Blackberry and am ready to purchase at a moment's notice. I do not play games
