M42 cars are slow. Extremely slow.
M20 cars are not as slow, but still very slow.
I'll stick with the 318is. Like a few have already mentioned, if I wanted a 'fast' car, I would have bought something else.
And like most people who knows how to really drive cars (or at least think they can), the chances are you can't even maximize the capabilities of the M42. So really, in the end, it comes down to personal preference
- gas mileage diff, insurance price diff, longevity?, 2 extra cylinders, etc.
If it was me, looking for a non-M E30 all over again, I'd just buy the first car that is in good physical shape, and has good records.~ Go Canucks Go! ~

Fixing an M42's lack of power is a bit harder.
Anyway a 318is will outrun a 320i always. A 318is will be level with a 325i touring and a tunned 318IS will outrun a 325i Sport.

I say 325i or 325is,
Remember these cars are worn, bushings and so on,
Handling? no non-track e30 owner knows how to really work their car, so it´s not going to differ,
I drive a 316 carb, wich runs a little lean, I get about 30mpg, while driving like a jackass, I´d definitly use a M20 and get 27mpg, those 3mpg are so worth it,
Best e30 model for future build up is the ´83 318i from europe, it had nothing, absolutly nothing, 2222lbs(BMW´s numbers) with 105hp
318is comes in at 2600lbs, 325is is 2788lbs, my fully dressed Mtech II with "17´s and S50B30 motor weighs about 2800-2850lbs,
16,4lb/hp - 325is
19lbs/hp - 318is
21lbs/hp - 318i
I don´t see anyone saying the e30 318i handles the best?
away with the 4 cyl wrongness, and say hello to the 6cyl rightnessGunni

Well I've kinda set my sights on the 318is but if I can find a nice manual 325is I'll jump on it. 318is can beat 320i? I had a 320i and I thought it was a pretty decent car. And if I wanted real performance I'd buy an E30 M3 (I hope I will...one day....when I've got money)E30 325i 1990 (Winter beater)
E36 M3/4/5 1997 (Futur IP car?)
